Default howdy

I am shopping for components for my first build and have some ?'s. A business contact of mine works for intel and kindly gave me a new Q6600 proc to give me a good headstarthe of course recommended a BX2 mobo to go with it and I was wondering if the "additional stabillity" of both components being intel made is worth the cost and lack of features.

I am sure there will be lots more ?'s, but will save those for later.

thanks in advance

First of all, welcome to HardwareLogic.

Greetings and salutations out of the way, what are the goals for this new system? There are a lot of good options out there at various price points, but to make an appropriate recommendation, we need to know what your intentions are for this build. Gaming? SLI? Overclocking? Stability? Office machine?...

main use is photo editing/organizing, frequent(but not hardcore) gaming: RPG & RTS mostly, and general family workhorse.

I would like to dabble in overclocking, but am very new to the build/tweak hobby so I need a sweet user friendly bios and such. I don't want to have to by new upgrades every 2 months, but I am wanting something that will handle most of what the near future might bring. long story short- bang for the buck!

SLI is not a deal breaker, but if the future is looking strong for the technology then might like it.

the stabillity has never been a problem for me but I have heard lots of horror stories about builds that are more work than fun. Those might be exaggerations but I've never built so I don't know.

Bang for buck with overclocking and gaming in mind would have me lean towards either the 650i or new P35 chipset. We've got some formal reviews of P35 based motherboards coming up in the next couple of weeks, with the Gigabyte P35-DS3R looking to be a contender.

On the 650i front, it's tough to overlook EVGA's sub-$100 (after rebate) board, if you don't have plans to run two videocards.

Welcome to HL.

Being a new guy to this website and to computer building and modification...I didn't know anything about building or modifications before I came here. To me...it's fun once you know half way what your doing. These guys on here give great advice in simple to understand language. The more I learned, the more I wanted to "do". But I've got a good imagination and creative side though...that helps.

I've looked at several websites...this one is my favorite. I hope you stick around.

Welcome.

As for your new build, I recommend a P965 motherboard or the new P35 motherboards. Also, check out HL's Recommended Hardware Lists. (Haha, beat Blake to it!)

welcome to HL...

anyway, looks like your going for a first ever build...
since Core2Dou family of processors will go chop down to more cheap, and they will last you for a while... max of 5-8years only if your not a hardcore enthusiast like most of the members.

Recommendation page is also at the homepage... but the flavor of the month with processor is the Q6600 Quad Processor which will be a great deal for you buck...

and Mobo, i'll go with 680i that one4yu2c gave...

SLI is marketing over kill,if you want bang for the buck a single 8800GTX, will help you long way, but 8800GTS is on the budget now... Brands, personally love EVGA. XFX and BFG is also good...

well thats it for now untill you get to your gameplan for building.

believe me when i say this, you have to like doing it to be fun if not you'll be in a lot of hard work...
btw building DIY comps are easy pickins now a days, its just being young and doing puzzles again ...

Antec TP 550W
