Default X1800\X1900 PWM sink mod

Over at OCForums a member machined a custom heatsink to replace the stock ATI one layed across the cards PWM controllers, and also covering the black boxess next to it(inductors?). So I did some experimenting on my own and found that the black boxes(I believe they are inductors, correct me if i'm wrong) laying parallel to the red heatsink became awfull hot(95c) when overvolting and benchmarking. We all know heat is no good when it comes to computer hardware. Viper John aka 'radeon mod god' sinks this area as well on his cutoms cooled cards. So here is what I did.

the sinks are MicroCool Chipsinks.
The first 2 pictures are a pair of X1800XT Crossfire Cards

And here is my current X1900XTX

To finish things off, I mount a medium RPM fan wire tied to the Cardkeeper in a manner that it pushes air right over the pwm area. PWM temps dropped 30C!!!

That card sure looks slick now. Are there any noticeable differences? Maybe you got a few more mhz?

A couple upcoming article are going to look at stuff like this...First we have a 7900GTX article that will actually compare the 7900GTX to the X1900XTX....bioth great cards, both pretty expensive, and honestly....both have pretty poor cooling solutions....which brings me to the next article, Arctic Cooling's new Accelero X2 Cooler, which looks very interesting.

@ Simple: X1900 and 7800 both have 2.10" bolt patterns, A BH-610 modded w\ the 2.1" pattern should bolt right on. I can get you in contact with the gentleman who made mine. What he does is, buys all the parts and then adds 10.00 for labor. No guarantee he will do it again. Mine came to 35.00 shipped.

@ tyreal: I no longer have to deal with the hair-dryer sound of the stock cooler. The 610 has the capacity to dissapate more heat then the stock cooler. Depending what 60mm fan you use, temps vary. With the stock top-motor fan on mine, temps are about 5c cooler then the ATI cooler @ 100% fan speed.

I think anyone overclocking or overvolting could benefit from the PWM mod. The heat from the pwm area is enough to make the entire PCB hot to the tough.

I can't deal with videocard stock coolers either. They are so piss poor. They don't cool very well, mounting methods aren't very good, they are LOUD... theres more but i'll stop ranting. Manufacturers should put more time into making their cooling units better instead of making bigger bundles or nicer boxes...

Believe it or not the stock ATI X18/1900 cooler @ 100% cools very well, it's just sooo damn loud...... We're talking hair dryer loud.

Holy smokes. Thats the main problem. Pretty much all stock videocard coolers are like that.
