Default Zalman Fan Controller Catches Fire

Yes you read that right, I got real flames shooting out of my computer this morning. Talk about a wakeup. I reached over to my server to turn the fans down because they were bugging me. When I did my computer just shut off. So what did I do? Thats right I turned it back on. I heard a loud crack, then smoke and flames came out the side of my server. I unplugged it as soon as I could. I haven't contacted Zaleman about this yet. This just happened, not even 10 mins ago. I will let you guys know what happens with this.

Didn't happen without pictures to prove it ;)

Have you had a chance to look into it deeper for a probable
cause?

Sorry I was too busy saying "Oh Sh*t" and grabbing for the plug, instead of the camera. Next time I will let my computer room catch on fire, so I can get some pics.

I haven't finished looking yet. I really have no Idea what the hell happened. The fan controller has been working just fine since I installed it almost 2 years ago. I haven't connected or disconnected anything to it since I installed it.

Wow, that's crazy. Hopefully nothing else is damaged. Let us know what happens with Zalman.

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

Not at all a good way to start a day.

Not to jump on your misfortune but we have a great shot at a forensic study here. The twisted pairs from the molex connectors are toast, so what loaded them so bad? That will be the root cause of the problem. The entire length of wire is burned telling us the short (and I assume direct short of 12 Volts) was at the controller or beyond.

Let us know what you find and again, sorry as that sucks.

Ron

I think this one might be on me. This past weekend I connected a second HDD to my server. I grabbed and connected the closest power connector I could find. Turns out that power connector was Daisy chained to the Fans that were then connected to the Fan Controller, all being powered by the power connector plugged into the Fan Controller. All was good until I went to adjust the power to the fans. So chalk one up to my dumb ass.

One of those whoops things. Actually the fan controller looks repairable and since you pretty much know the cause may well be worth a repair action. Hell turn it into a tutorial of sorts.

That sucks bro. So far, I've not caused actual flames in one of my rigs. Smoke for sure though.

Did anything get fried? Or do you even know yet?
