Default When Harddrive is connected system wont see Burner

This is some what a continuation with attempting to install windows. So now im at this point, I have two DVD roms and one is a Sony burner. When i connect the older toshiba DVD Rom and attempt to boot up from the XP Disk I get a message that says Cannot boot from CD message 5. When i connect the Sony DVD Burner the system doesnt even recognize that the DVD burner is connected. Ive checked all the connections and everything is sound. The jumper connections are correct. I just cant figure it out, any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Make sure the drives are recognized, initialized, and correctly ordered in the BIOS in order to boot from it. If they are IDE PATA drives, make sure you have the jumper set correctly for how you have them connected (Master or Slave).

Would the boot sequence in the Bios affect the DVD rom not being recognized once it boots up?

Nope... I have my HDD to boot first for faster loading times, and it doesn't affect the DVD drive at all in Windows.

A lot of little weird things could be the cause. Are you sure the sony drive works? Have you tried it in another pc. Is it getting power? Sometimes those 4pin molex connectors can be loose and the drive may not be getting power (check inside the molex connector to make sure all 4 of the little prongs are not bent or misaligned. Is the sony drive the only PATA/IDE drive on that particular cable? Maybe setting the jumper to Cable Select will help... The boot sequence will likely not affect whether the OS detects the drive, but if the drive is not detected by the bios at all, it is likely it will not be detected in in the OS (windows). Your bios should be able to set your PATA/IDE drives to Auto-detect, make sure of that. Keep pluggin away, eventually we'll figure it out. :)

How do you have these drives connected? Are they all PATA devices? Are they on the same channel (cable) or separate? Or is one or both SATA?

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"&

this may help...I dont know but it culdn't hurt to try it. I lost both of my drives when I uninstalled nero and this helped me get them both back.
