Question USB Flash Drive - CD Emulation?

I have a 1GB USB Flash Drive. I have had expierence with U3 software, and would like to know how it does that - write a code or something so that I can launch a menu that I have with my non-U3 drive. I think basically what I need to do is to emulate a CD as soon as the drive is plugged in - but I don't even know how to partition it like a hard drive can be partitioned. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi welcome to HL

I know you can emulate cd drives using iso files but I dont know of a way that you can use a flash drive to emulate a CD drive. Do you want it to work on any computer or just your's? also what is U3 software?

slightly off topic, but how is U3 for ya anyway?
I got my micro cruiser and immediately deleted U3 since it was conflicting with my college's computers when i was using the library comps. Now that im graduated, don't have that issue so wonderin if i should put U3 back in.

Seems like you could plug it in, then install something like Daemon Tools on it. Then when you unplug the flash drive, the virtual optical drive (as well as the external storage drive of the flash drive its self) will disappear.

I guess what I really needc to know is how to trick windows into thinking that my usb drive is a CD drive - once again, like U3 - but not U3... Am I making any sense?

What exactly are you trying to accomplish with this? Do you have a disk image saved on your flash drive that you want Windows to automatically play? Do you want to be able to plug in your flash drive and "mount" a disk image onto it so it will play like you put a disk in a regular optical drive?

Do you want to send the flash drive to me and I'll just write "this is a CD drive" on it?

Maybe he means trick Windows into thinking it's the "D:" drive or something along those lines...

I'm guessing by emulating a CD, to have the flash drive boot up whatever program or partition whenever it's inserted into the USB port. Like having an image of a CD that autoruns from the flash drive. What OS are you using? XP normally just sees the flash drive as a removable storage, and from my experience even with multiple partitions it only shows the first one. Before mine died, I was able to partition it and make it bootable with a utility I got from some HP drivers, called DiskonKey. Perhaps that'll help?

I would like to have the whole USB drive emulated as a cd so I can AutoLaunch my file through AUTORUN.INF - not just bring up an autoplay with it as the default option.
