Default SATA drive question

This is my first SATA HDD configuration. I've noticed that on my tool bar at the bottom right there is an icon that allows me to "safely remove hardware". I've only ever noticed this icon on other computers when a camera, voice recorder, etc.. are attached via a USB port. Is this normal for a SATA HDD?

From what I know, this is caused by the sata drive being hot-swap and cant be turned off :(.. I have it for my external dvd drive, laptops cd drive, a few other devices that dont ever get removed... its really a pain.

That really isn't a normal thing, not really sure why it shows up there. Do you have a card reader or any other type of internal USB device hooked up to your motherboard on the internal USB headers?

no, actually it is perfectly normal. If your board and drive support hot swapping that icon will show up there.

Oh, huh. Guess you learn something new everyday! I've never seen it on any of my three SATA boards and have never heard anyone else mention it before, so I figured it wasn't very common.

I have it too. I just ignore it. It moves to the inactive group anyway so its no big deal.

Yup yup. If it becomes bothersome, the icon can be hidden:
  • - RIGHT-CLICK the taskbar (any of the blue area on the bottom of your screen)

    - Select PROPERTIES

    - Click on the CUSTOMIZE button

    - HIGHLIGHT 'Safely Remove Hardware'

    - From the pulldown menu, select ALWAYS HIDE
