| LOL "Best for any PC" is still pretty subjective. Best for gaming, video encoding, surfing the net, massive storage of erm...pictures etc? What is your primary use for the computer in question? | Well, you could get 147GB 15,000 RPM SAS drives, but that can get really expensive, $1200 for 2 of this drive assuming you would want to RAID them, then $325 for this SAS controller card, but that card is relatively low end for SAS. But that is the BEST of the BEST. But for sane prices, the Seagate 750 GB for maximum storage, and the Raptor 150GB for maximum speed at a sane price Opteron 64 165--1.5GB DDR--ECS KA1 MVP(thanks HL!)--x1800GTO 256MB--Seagate 320GB SATA--Antec 550 Watt--Antec P180 |

| I'm Diggin it! | Lead Head gave you the best advice already then. Just cut out the SAS drives part and read the end of his post. Personally, I'd not worry about a Raptor drive. They may be fast, but those damned things are loud. Heard over three 80mm fans at full blast loud. The Seagate 750Gb drive would be my choice at that price point. But if you have to have the fastest for under $400, the 150Gb Raptor just edges out that 750Gb. you'd only be able to tell from benchmark readings though. Real world, I doubt you'd notice a difference between the two. 1) Storage space. With computer games now being released on DVD, game installs now consume even more HD space. Want an example? How about this: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. This MMO eats HD's for lunch, needing over 17GB of disk space. Supreme Commander? Try almost 7.5GB The point is that games are and will continue to get more complex and require more disk space. Bigger hard drives are needed, even at the prospect of a slight (miniscule really) performance difference, (which you won't even notice) which conveniently brings me to my next point.... 2) You will simply not notice the speed difference of the Raptor's faster spindle speed versus the Seagate. That's akin to someone noticing the difference between a 2.2Ghz clock speed versus a 200Mhz bump. Sure, you can say that the proc performance is better, but can you discern how much without looking at the benchmarks? I seriously bet you cannot. =) | ||

| If I were you, and the price truly does not matter, I'd wait for the 1TB hard drives to be shipped and get one of them. |

| S.T.A.L.K.E.R. = almost 10GB. now if i could only get past the first level!!! the way its going, im grabbing a 320GB drive next week, and im probably gonna be using that for my windows XP/programs/games drive, and using my current 160GB for all the storage; the games are just growing in size, and with so much more info going into DX10 games, the next step for me is a 750GB hdd for storage, and im set...for now... until games start going 50GB+ each of course:P |

| Hmm ya I guess that makes more sense to get a seagate rather than both because of game sizes today. I have 2 x 320gb Western Digital Seagates already which the space is really 596GB. Should I buy one more since those are really cheap??? 320gb cost $70. 3 of these would only be 210 +shipping maybe extra 5-10. Roughly $220 for 894GB. Does this make sense now that the 750gb is $300??? You get more space for less money w/ the 3x320gb rather than 1x750gb. Wassup with that? | Colonel Calamity | space... if you have enough open hard drive spots in your case then you are good to go with another 2-3 more 320GB drives and just raid the second 2... not sure what you would need 1.5TB for though (well I sure don't), I transfered everything I really needed to my new 320GB and including 70GB worth of movies, I still have 181 GB free out of 298 formatted (windows size) ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair!
