Default Install of an old hard drive

Question.........

I wanted to know if I can install my old hard drive, which has windows home edition on it, in place of my current main hard drive which has xp pro...so I can retrive my pictures and and songs and place them on my storage drive I have installed and then switch them back....without harming my computer or needing to do a bunch of changes and stuff to anything.

My old hard drive is bad...loud clicking sound...but contains stuff I want to keep. Wanted to swap it out for a minute or two to retrive stuff. Both are sata.

Is this as simple as I would hope it is?

I would attach the old drive, and boot off your current drive, then move the files from the old drive to the data drive.

Ok, so don't remove my current harddrive....just insert the old one and make sure it boots from my current C drive first.

Even though I have 2 different harddrives with 2 different OS's...it will be fine as long as it boots from my c drive...correct?
