yes. But that will void the warranty of your external enclosure. And many external enclosures will use IDE drives unless otherwise specified.

Here the other day, I seen a 320gb external SATA II drive for less than you could buy the hard drive by it self

It depends on the drive and the enclosure. If it is one of those external hard drive units that you buy from like Seagate or Lacie or Western Digital with the hard drive already included, then TTPete is correct, it will likely void your warranty. But you also have to see what kind of enclosure you have. Some of those smaller "pocket" external hard drives contain 2.5" or smaller drives inside and need an adapter to connect internally in a computer.

If you have an empty enclosure (like the Thermaltake Max 4), then you can swap the hard drives out as much as you want (given you are getting compatible hard drive types. But again, if you have an enclosure for 2.5" hard drives, then you will need an adapter to get it hooked up inside your system.

Also, be aware that External HDD's are typically 5200RPM drives. Newer ones might be 7200RPM, but have a smaller buffer. Take a look at the drive when you pull it out and see what the specs are. You usually won't want to use a drive from an external enclosure as your boot drive because of these things.

Unless you have a old HDD, it shouldn't be 5400rpm.
It's true though it has probably a small buffer. They never give you the "big model" in those external HDDs.
