Default DO NOT COVER ANY DRIVE HOLES

I have a 250GB hard disk which has been working fine for ages until I tried to install Ubuntu Linux 6.10 to dual boot alongside Windows XP Pro. I booted on my ubuntu live CD and tried to install. I then got myself in a huge mess trying to add extra partitions to my drive and could no longer boot into windows or install Linux.

I then decided to put in an old 6GB disk so I could temporarily install windows to get on the net and listen to a bit of music until I thought of a solution to my dilemma. However this did not work out.

The drive was not recognised and I started to smell burning. A few days later I took out the drive only to find that one of its chips had melted. It was then I saw on my 250GB disk that there was a nice burn mark on the "DO NOT COVER ANY DRIVE HOLES" label as the 6GB drive was on top of it and melted onto the label.

So now I am stuck with this 250GB drive that contains everything good on the Internet downloaded and organized and no way to get it off. I am currently using a 40GB drive with Windows XP Pro.

When booting with only the 250GB

When I boot with only the 250GB drive installed windows boots up fine, I log on and receive the message windows is logging off instantly. Before anyone mentions it safe mode dose not work.

When booting with both the 250GB and the 40GB

When booting with both the 250GB drive and the 40GB drive the computer boots off the 40GB and the 250GB drive is not recognised.

Bad news:
You're gonna have to pay some money

Good News: It doesnt have to be a lot! You can just get a cheapie 160gb or 250gb External drive from your local Fry's/Newegg and use a live linux cd to get all your crap/good stuff/great apps off your un-boot-able 250gb =P

The morale of the story is:
When they say don't do something, Don't do it!

I didn't actually think it meant anything but apparently that hole is an exhaust port for the hd or something?

I don't have any money at the moment (Time to get a job) but when I do this is the least of my worry's. What I really want is 4 x 250GB SATA drives and a new case to mod. Just thought id share my trauma with my fellow modrz.

Damn, that sucks. Well, if nothing else, you've got yourself two very nice, strong magnets to play around with. I recently disassembled a Maxtor 250GB hard drive and removed its magnets. They are now pinning my 26 page English lit rough draft paper to my refrigerator.

Oh please, those are only good for 15-20 Pounds. Go over to wondermagnet.com and pick up one good for 100 pounds. Like I did.

The windows shutting down thing seems more like an OS error, then an HDD problem. I can still see one of the filtered vent holes still open and clear. Try testing the HD on another computer.

I was referring to the total thickness of the paper being held down, not the weight. =)

Sphincter beat me to it. Since safe mode doesn't work, I'd recommend a repair installation with the CD. If that doesn't help, you can use an in-place installation and try to recover everything (no formatting, just let setup delete the C:\WINDOWS folder - it will leave everything else alone, even the Documents and Settings folders)
