Default Disk Init Time

Hi:

Some of you may recall my thread about my new velociraptor hard drive. It is a very fast drive even compared to my old Raptor that it replaced. What is unusual however is that my boot times increased when I replaced the old Raptor with the new one (off an image). Most reviews I have read claim faster loading times. It seems that the boot process is slower near the beginning so I downloaded bootvis and checked out the results. The Disk Init time is over 10 seconds and this seems long compared to what others report. Does anyone know exactly what disk init means and why it could be taking longer than it should.

Thanks, Kent

Default Re: Disk Init Time

have you tried updating the BIOS?
the disk init (disk initialization) is the point at which it initializes or starts the spinning and read/write cycles the hard drive so it is ready for everything else. One option is to RMA it and get a replacement, see if the new one does the same. It may be the initialization chip in the drive itself which is why I suggest this as an option.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Thanks Screwball. Yes I updated the BIOS but there was no difference. That is interesting about the chip inside the drive. I wonder if by design it is taking longer on the velociraptor. When I said the Disk init times are long compared to others, that is with other drives. I don't know anyone with a velociraptor to compare. Maybe it needs a longer time than other drives for some reason but my Raptor was faster. Returning and trying another would probably give me an answer but I am not sure I want to do that without being certain there is something wrong. Thanks for your ideas.
