Default 2TB in 2009 says Seagate

DailyTech - Seagate CEO Says 2TB HDD and Its First SSD Coming Next Year

I figured they weren't that far off as the 1.5TB are on the verge of being released (or are there some for sale now already?)

Quote:
Seagate doesn’t currently have any drives in the SSD market. Seagate currently is one of the largest makers of traditional hard drives and while it foresees a time when the solid state drive (SSD) is a better value than traditional HDDs; that time is not now. Seagate announced that next year it will double its highest capacity traditional HDD to 2TB and will introduce its first SSD. CEO Bill Watkins says Seagate will first target enterprise customers with its SSDs where the benefits of lower power consumption and faster data access will be most welcome. The enterprise environment will also be willing to pay the premium SSDs will still demand whereas the majority of the consumer market is not willing to pay the premium at this time says Seagate.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

As far as I know we're still at 1TB, which is sufficient to say the least.
I'm not all that surprised though, it's a somewhat logical step, just like we went from 750GB to 1TB we'll go from 1TB to 1.5TB and then 2.

The most surprising hard drive news I've read lately had to be WesternDigital Velociraptor, a 2.5inch 10,000rpm drive beating the competition in terms of speed. o_O I wish I had one, or at least had the chance to play with one.
At $1 the gigabyte the pricing isn't too bad either.

I was thinking I saw some 1.25 or 1.5TB drives out there but I guess I was thinking of the external storage setups that have 2x 750GB or the 2x 1TB drives.

I love my 1 TB Seagate drive, actually debating whether to buy another one or not as i've got like 1088 gbs free on my comp, but only really 998 since a part of it is an XP Partition on my C drive. Yes ONLY 998GB lol.

I'm with Seagate on that one. I don't think SSD has matured enough to get on home PC's. Not only the price, but performance too. Although we see a bunch of crazy ass SSD benches, they're not all like that. They do offer virtually no seek time compared to your standard hard disk though.

Hmm, pretty soon you'll be able to lose a whole 2TB in a second!

Yep, I will third that one!!! Get rid of the moving parts, and they will become more reliable.

not necessarily... how reliable are thumb drives and system memory in the long term? those are usually the 2 fastest dying and most likely to get killed due to rogue electrical charges...
