Default 24" LCD Recommendations

I know there are a gazillion threads about this on many of the forums out there, but I'm really lost in what TN and Spva panels ..etc etc are? Gloss or no gloss?

So, I've just completed a large side job and I have a few dollars aching for me to spend them on a new monitor.

I'll be honest, I'd love a $700 - $800 monitor, but I do not have it. So I'm looking for something that would be great for games, photo editing, Adobe Photoshop and the occasional movie.

I have $450 - $600 to spend. I have an old 19" Samsung LCD I've been happy with for 4 years, but I've read good things about BenQs, Dells, Gateways and HPs. I suppose it come down to preference in many ways.

Anyone have any feedback on the Samsung 2493HM?

I like my Acer. It's huge, dude! Plus its HD - streaming from HD sites looks great! I use it for everything - gaming, photo editing, video editing, etc. No problems.

Aside from the somewhat narrow viewing angle (easily solved because the monitor has adjustable height, tilt and everything) the monitor is awesome (I got the 245B, only difference being shiny bezel) considering the price.

A bit off topic, those are my settings frosty, what are yours?
MagicBright set to custom
Brightness 100
Contrast 80
MagicColor Intelligent
Color Tone Normal
Color Control RGB 50 50 50
Gamma Mode 1
Caorse 2080
Fine 0
Sharpness 20
H-Position 50
V-Position 50

This way the brighter colors are a bit washed off (not good for accurate color reproduction works in photoshop) so if you want something more neutral turn MagicColor Off. :)

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

It's the down arrow when you're not in the OSD. :)

I have a samsung and an acer monitor, a 19in samsung (931bw), and a 22in acer, no idea about the model number.

The samsung definatly has a leg up image quality wise, but the acer is awesome for the price I paid for it (then again, so is the samsung... 120 dollar black friday special... it's amazing...)

Either Gateway or Dell. The Gateway has nearly every input possible (FHD2400)... HDMI, DVI, VGA, S-Video, Composite, Component.... and 4 USB 2.0 ports. All for $549... retail.

The new Dell has DisplayPort, but who the hell knows when you'll use that.

- Core 2 Quad Q6600
- DFI Infinity 975X
- 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800
- 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM
- ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB
- Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W
- Acer 19" P191W Monitor
- Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution
- Vista Ultimate x64

I have the Gateway FPD2485W and it is decent. The colors are very good as is the contrast (lights and darks). My only complaints are that the touch sensitive OSD controls on the bezel are a little finicky and annoying at times and there is noticeable ghosting artifacts in certain circumstances. But the viewing angle is superb and the primary reason I bought the monitor over the cheaper TN based panels like the Samsung. I also use a Dell E248WFP at work and it is also pretty nice. It still suffers from some ghosting although not as bad as the Gateway.

The new Gateway 24" LCD seems to have a smaller viewing angle is much less expensive so it seems they've switched the TN panel type as well. After looking at the two panel types (TN and S-PVA) side by side in the store, there is no contest in terms of contrast and color consistancy across the whole screen as well as color reproduction and brightness. I will never buy another TN based LCD again.
