Default Your Preferred Disk Deframentation Software

I'm looking for a good program to buy/download to defrag my hard drive. I used to use a free version of one of the popular defrag programs. I forgot what it was called.

So what do you use and why?

I use Diskeeper by Executive Software. The other popular choice is PerfectDisk by Raxco software.

To be honest, I use Windows' defrag utility. I know that sounds lame, but I haven't had any problems with it on my current rig.

I'm going to be looking for a Linux defrag program soon. I haven't started looking, but I don't there were any installed when I installed Linux.

I use Diskeeper. I like the set it and forget it option that lets you schedule defrag times or use a screensaver mode to keep the disc defraged.

I've only ever used windows disk defragmenter, but I get the feeling that maybe I should be using something else? Never had a problem with it so far though...

There's no reason you or anyone else should have a problem with the built in defragmenter, but there are certainly better options out there. In fact, most people are not aware of this, but the built in defragmenter is actually a lite version of Diskeeper:

Microsoft Support Link:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Windows XP, and Microsoft Windows 2000 include a tool for disk defragmentation. The Windows Disk Defragmenter tool is a limited version of the Diskeeper program from Diskeeper Corporation. Disk Defragmenter does not include all the features available in the full version of Diskeeper.

As long as the defragmenting engine (or whatever) is good, then I'm not worried. I could care less about automatic defragmentation and such.

The engine is 'okay,' but dated by several versions, especially with today's hard drives. Also, Diskeeper (and similar programs) bring quite a bit more to the table than just convenience oriented features. For example, click on the feature comparision chart link on the right hand side ---> LINK
