Default XP Question

In all the times I've had to reload XP, I've never had to use the disk to boot after the install was complete. I always went back into the BIOS and switched it to boot from hd and no problems. But this time it dosen't matter what I do, every time I restart, it asks for "The Boot Disk"? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. It even has my tech buddy at the comp store confused. Thanks, Bailey.

Are you sure you installed XP correctly? It might be a partial or incorrect installation; it's probably best it you wipe the HDD clean and do a reinstall.

Clean install on a new drive. No problems except for the boot.

Drive works fine with a different board. I just bought a new PS and get the same results. Is it possible for the IDE channel to go bad on a board? thanks, Bailey.

That's not impossible, try to put it on the second channel. Change the cable too. ;)

I get the same results. I guess I'll get to see how good MSI's RMA department is. Thanks for the help. Bailey.

Before worrying about a RMA maybe it would be wise to either reinstall (clean) or hell just boot from the CD and go into the repair console. Try running a FIXBOOT and FIXMBR from the command prompt.

FIXBOOT

Microsoft Corporation

FIXMBR

Just on the off chance you have a corrupt boot file.

Thanks but I've already tried the repair console to no avail. I really think I have a corrupt MB. I'm going to try and get a SATA drive today and see what happens. Bailey.

When you put the drive on the second computer, did you use it as a boot drive, or just as an additional drive?

I recently had a corrupted MBR, and nothing worked short of formatting the entire drive, to completely rewrite the MBR. I had 3 partitions on it, and formatting just C: didn't work. Neither did anything from the repair console, etc.

It worked fine as a data drive on another computer.
