Default XP Home fails!

Old HP won't boot up. XP Home fails, even safe mode. Don't have XP disk (cheap HP build!) and pc is far out of warranty.

Is there anything I can do short of buying and installing new XP pro?

I don't really want to pay some crazy fee to HP for the to fix this. any thoughts?

There might be a recovery partition that you could use to reformat/reinstall, that's how my old hp's were. Can't remember the keystroke to start it up though.....

The buran is correct - HP uses a recovery partition. Check their support site for info.

Warning: You will lose all data - so use Ubuntu or knoppix or something to BU the data first.

What he said......

Every manufacture is different, Dell used F11 at boot up and Sony uses F10 at boot up. You have to look on their support website to see what key combo it is. You will press this key during boot up at the same time you would if you wanted to enter bios.

Found it, you press F11

HP Backup and Recovery Manager is quick and user-friendly. To run, simply go to All Programs > HP Backup & Recovery > HP Backup and Recovery Manager.
With HP Backup & Recovery Manager, file restoration is easy. To recover a deleted file, simply use the Restore Wizard. For a full system restoration, press the F11 key during bootup and then select "Recover PC" from the menu.

You can always use Linux instead of buying another XP if it comes to that.

Might have to go that route. F11 brought me to "WAIT", but then nothing happened. No disk activity. Restarting led to same problems as before. Safe mode keeps restarting. Normal start mode gets me partway through login but then BSOD which is gone too fast for me to read - can't find any bios setitngs to stop it restarting at BSOD.

F11 now brings me right to BIOS.

Running out of patience. Besides paying HP to fix, any other thoughts? Is there any way to make my own boot disk, so I could at least figure out what the problems are?

If you know someone with a XP Home disc your cd key should work.
