Default X64 Lag

Well ... I am on my 5th rebuild to try and make an X64 run well.

I got it running ok and stable but there is this strange LAG that happens every so often ... perhaps a 3-4 second lag.

I have most unused services turned off, system restore turned off, just about every tweak [that works] applied. Cleaned and defragged the registry, defragged the HD. Remote regedit cleaned it up, verified I have no malware, spyware etc.

I even have been running 6 Gigs of Ram and running a high end caching program. [I swapped out the Ram and same problem exists]

Each thing I have been doing has been improving that lag ... but I cannot find the "cause" of it. [And completely remove the issue]

XP Pro 32 bit with the same hardware runs perfectly without any lag whatsoever ... [and thats without supertuning it with tweaks and speed caching]

I'm pretty sure it is just the kernel or some driver that is making things hang a bit. Has anyone noticed something similar?

The place I see it more than anything is when I doubleclick on "My Computer" ... lag also shows on startup with the system Icons. [Autoplay turned off]

Under 32 Bit XP Pro ... not any lag at all ... runs perfect.

So, are we to assume this in XP 64??? The reason I ask, is of course there are both 64bit XP, and Vista now

Yup XP X64 Pro ... I figured to venture into it ... hoping that SP3 would even make it better ... I won't be doing Vista until SP2.

I found it is usually a driver that causes that. I had a similar issue when I had a full limited time version of XP x64 and as soon as I updated the graphics driver it took care of the problem immediately. As soon as I went to a newer driver it came right back so I went back to the older version and no problems.

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I'll bet your right ... I have all the newest drivers ... I think I'll try some older drivers ... starting with Video drivers. [I'll let you know] Thanks ... it sure helps having input. Especially when your so engrossed ... the obvious escapes you.

I put a lot of work into getting a stable build ... I just can't handle anything except for a perfectly smooth running PC that is tweaked and OC to its ultra-stable max.

Something you might want to try if you haven't already, is the newest beta driver. If you are running an Nvidia card and xp64 its the 169.09 drivers for the Gforce 6, 7, and 8 cards.

ForceWare Release 169

You might give them a try and see if that takes care of the lag problem, but I have to agree, it does sound like a video driver issue.

Can you give us some more information on your system?
Mainboard, etc
I notice in your first post you said you are using e-SATA,
most e-Sata chips (if they are SiL 13xx series have high CPU overhead and can cause that pause and stutter that you mention.

I would run HDTach and see what your HDD is doing.
I am willing to bet you are seeing Lag due to that.
