Default Windows XP64

Would it be safe to assume that XP64 would run twice as fast than XP considering my system specs?

You will onyl see an advantage with 64-bit software if everything you run is 64-bit.

For example... to run a game good in 64-bit you need a game that supports 64-bit, 64-bit drivers, and 64-bit windows.

Yes, what Tyreal said. But you also need to have a 64 bit processor too
But the real-world improvements from 64-bit computer are (unfornately) not twice as fast as 32-bit. Kindof like how the theoretical bandwidth available from SATA2 is 300mb/s while most any desktop HDD cannot even stress the PATA standard of 133mb/s... It's theoretical vs. actual

I would say no, I do not recommend going with windows XP-64, even if you have a 64-bit processor. This is mainly because it still doesn't have the driver support across the board to make it a worth your time/effort to upgrade. And by the time the drivers are widely available and stable, Windows Vista will be mainstream. But who knows how that will do, so for the time being, I would say no, just stick with regular XP Home or XP Professional and save yourself the headache of trying to find drivers for all your stuff and dealing with the initial instability of a new/not yet mainstream OS.

Definitely not.

I've been there twice so far, and have come back each time.

The Win64 is great. No complaints at all. Snappy, fast, smooth...

Driver and application support on the other hand sucks big time. Several of the major apps I need for work do not run correctly.

And the biggest gain you'd see would be in the 15~20% range. Typical would be 5%. Some things would run slower, as they would have to run in 32bit emulation mode.

So no. I wouldn't recommend the Win64 route.

I don't think it'll be feasable 'til Vista comes along, personally.

edit: And the whole thing is a 64bit hack of a 32bit hack of a 16bit hack of an 8bit hack of a 4bit architecture. And we know who to blame for that. But don't let me get started on it.
