Here's what Microsoft has on it.
"STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error" or "STOP: C0000221 STATUS_IMAGE_CHECKSUM_MISMATCH" error message occurs

a single shallow scratch on an OEM Disc can render it corrupted. you can use one of those cd doctor or some sort, correct me if i'm wrong but this happened to me so many times but the only way to solve this is to keep trying to install with that disc or buy a new one...

You could try the banana cd repair trick.

I had that issue once some time back on a fresh install on a new build. Also for what it is worth with an ATI graphics card. No matter what I tried same result, including swapping the RAM and trying single sticks.

Finally I yanked the graphics card and shoved in an cheapie I use for test purposes. This actually runs in part with the link Joker posted:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the file that is described in the error message is corrupted. The following files are checked for integrity when Microsoft Windows XP starts: •All driver files (except those that are loaded by the system loader to start. the computer)•All dynamic-link libraries (DLLs), including User, Graphics Device Interface (GDI), Shell, Kernel, Ntdll, Crtdll, and others.
After a full and no problem install using the cheap card I shut down and installed my card and then the drivers. Just something to look at if you have access to another graphics card. Just about any card will do.

Ron
