| Suppose I've made a backup drive image of a hdd that contains an activated windows XP. If I format the primary drive and restore said formatted drive to the aforementioned image, will the XP instance already be activated, or will I need to reactivate? For the record, I am in no way trying to "dodge" activation, it's more of a hypothetical question. =). Thanks |

| Colonel Calamity | yes it should come back already activated as that information is stored in the backed up registry ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |

| Hmmm. Thanks =). If it'll indeed preserve the registry perfectly, that would keep one from having to reinstall games that require registry entries for only the fact. |

| Functional Alcoholic | Actually it depends on the type of backup you're restoring. If it's an image backup then yes everything will be just like it was before, if it's just a file backup then you might have to reactivate windows. |
