Default Windows 7 Next Year

According to Bill it's not far off.

"Sometime in the next year or so we will have a new version." Referring to Windows 7, the code name for the next full release of Windows client software, Gates said: "I'm super-enthused about what it will do in lots of ways."

Rrrriight.

But nevertheless I'm looking forward to Windows 7 to see if it's better than Vista.
I've decided I'm just going to skip Vista altogether, XP FTW!!!

I dought we will see it before Christmas 09...
but the prospects of some information out there at least initially looks promising. They are talking about building on a minimal kernel structure much like how Linux and Apple have done it for many years. Each program and driver just plugs into the kernel so the bloat is reduced. The driver is not "turned on" until something actually uses it. So if you are just web surfing with no sound the sound driver stayed turned off and out of memory but as soon as something needs it, it is turned on and does its job almost instantaneously.

As for the timeframe:

Vista successor, Windows 7 to be released next year?

Quote:
To regain its strength, Microsoft has to do two things. First, it cannot let Windows 7 ship without the spit and polish that Windows Vista didn't get. When time hasn't been spent on refining the experience, the rough edges come to annoy customers. Everything put in the OS needs to be ready for prime time, or be left out. That's not a timing issue, but a philosophical one. Related to this, Microsoft must therefore not bite off more than it can chew.
Second, and more importantly, Windows 7's milestones, beta process, and release to manufacturing should not be date-driven, but by the company determining what Windows 7 needs to be a truly worthy release. Rather than worry about Software Assurance customers, Microsoft needs to worry about righting its ship. If Windows 7 is a bomb, there won't be many Software Assurance customers left to worry about appeasing.
I do agree with many of his points and things that should have been done with Vista... "get it done", not "get it out" should have been their target. Hopefully they will listen to the reduced sales they are seeing with Vista. They projected around 150 million within a year, yet about 1 1/2 years later it is around 100 million.
Get it right or don't bother.

Looks like ole Bill is trying to increase his stock values. I doubt we will see Windows 7 before 2010 if the same thing happens as did with Vista.

Vista finally got to the point that the train was leaving the station with or without the support it needed rather than getting everyone on board first and then going with it... even now over a year later they still don't have everyone on board and people are getting mad at Creative or other companies when they really have not had long enough to get proper support released, which means they release "patches" or temporary fixes.
