Default What's a good program to make CGI characters?

My wife has always been fascinated by the images of the characters on the boxes of the "WARCRAFT" games, and wants to know if there is a good program available to make people that look realistic like that. I have some games where you can make sims, but she doesn't like what they do as far as doing faces. It's not like she can use those programs I have, she just doesn't like the graphics they're programmed with. She's always on the lookout for good graphics software. Any ideas?

I did some google and found this:
3DLinks.com - Ultimate 3D Links - 3D Software : Modelers Shareware :
but i Don't know if there's anything "realistic" enough.

But U can design your house with it!

I appreciate the links, guys - thanks!

She has her eye on a couple of the programs, but her video card needs a serious upgrade, not to mention RAM, before she can use any of them. Her card is old, and if I'm not mistaken, doesn't support OpenGL. But I imagine I can get ahold of one that will for cheap.

I would recommend Daz3D because it is free. Big download though, not good for dial-up users.

They are pretty tough to learn but you can do some awesome stuff if you master one of them. Blender has A LOT of the tutorials out there so that may be a good one to try (huge learning curve tho).

My wife is a firm believer in the idea that "Tutorials Are Our Friends".
