| Silence..Or I kill you! | HAHAHAHAHA Well I am in the process of doing a test with the fricking Vista OS Well, so far, it has some pretty cool things. But I got to tell ya, it has too much! Half of the crap really isn't needed, as most of it is set for the dip wad that wants a bunch of fluffy crap and not go power The one big issue that I see so far, is my damn video card fan runs a full tilt all of the damn time. Not sure yet how to set that, but will look into that promptly. Haven't had time to add any game......Oh gezz, this should be fun, but I will try some soon. Oh boy, ain't this a blast Well MS wants a technical users opinion on this software......So far, it isn't blowing my skirt up LOL. I suppose once I dig into the depths of the core, maybe it can be manipulated to better fit the gamer, and/or power user that XP has come to be known for. I guess a little time will tell right? Well I am off to attempt to install a couple of games and then report back with my findings LOL Note: I am using the newest Nvidia beta drivers 101.41. Will try a couple of other drivers before making a final decision on video! |

| My experience in Vista has been when video issues, such as you described with the cards activity, is taking place it has always been with a nVidia card. My ATI card does not run hard in Vista and I have all the eye candy turned on, even the Dreamscene on my wifes machine and her video card is not running hard at all. I have been running Vista since the early beta and on many different machines. The only real complaint I have is with the UAC and even that is more the fault of the programmers of the sofware than the UAC. if software uses the UAC correctly it works great, if it does not the UAC is a real pain in the butt. | Silence..Or I kill you! | Ok early evaluation of gaming.....Installed UT2004, which is a pretty old game, and it went off without a glitch. I mean the game installed fast!!! I think that Vista has a better use of the SATA interface. I did have some serious sound issues at first, but was able to go get the updated Realtech audio drivers, and then entered the game and played for about a half an hour without any problems at all. Next up will be Battlefield 2 Will see how that goes ![]() |

| We take both criticism and positive comments very positively | My biggest problem with it thus far is that its a serious resource hog, and to be honest really offers nothing more than intrusive protection, poor driver support, and some eye candy.....but to be honest, its still early and may end up okay after a Service Pack or two..........but I have to say I'm disappointed in the difference between what was promised and what we got. | I think that however comes to how people use it. The calanedar program is a huge benefit for my family as we share calendars and this makes it a ton easier. The parental controls work really well and as a parent they are a most welcome addition. I will not even get started on how much more powerful the search system is, nothing done by Google or MSN for desktop search can touch what Vista does itself. Additionally as an OS Vista does as he noted seem to make better use of SATA, also it makes better use of dual core processors. As for the intrusive protection, I honestly feel this is of mixed blame. Microsoft could have made the control a bit more complete than just on and off, software vendors could actually write their software to fit the system MS gave them and thus allow the protection to work correctly. Driver support I feel is wrong to balme Microsoft or Vista for, many companies managed to get their drivers out on time and stable. The driver issues we see are companies that drug their heals and did not provide solid support. In the end I thin Vista hits the mark for it's intended goal which is a feature rich OS for the average user. | Silence..Or I kill you! | Well now, installed Battlefield 2 at a record time!!! Updated and installed the reality mod, jumped in game and had no issues at all. Seems that so far, Vista has been ok! Having some issues with some programs, such as Ntune!! Some of the features will work, but some will not. Had a couple of BSOD's last night, but I am pretty sure that it was due to the sound drivers. Now off to install Fear, see how that one goes. Actually, so far so good. Although I don't really think that I would be ready to make the big jump to Vista as a main OS at this time. It does take some getting used to, but then again so did XP when I made the jump from 98SE ![]() |

| F.E.A.R. and Vista do not go together because I have Vista, BUT I know how to fix it because I asked on the F.E.A.R. forums. If you notice the game will run GREAT at first, but then fps just drops to about 10 and the game becomes very choppy and stuttery. Vista uses some files in your device manager which causes this graphics downgrade. Go into your Device Manager and where it says Human Interface Devices (HID) There will be HID devices that you can disable because they aren't being used. Somehow vista runs these devices while you run F.E.A.R. so it ruins gameplay and graphic output. Disable the necessary ones by selecting properties on each one and go to drivers and select Driver Details. If it says "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device" then u can disable those. Don't disable the ones that actually show drivers. Make sure not to disable ones that are being used because that will cause problems. About Battlefield (2142) I couldn't run it for 2 months because I never disabled my onboard sound so you got lucky there. I have a creative sound card (x-fi gamer) So I had issues even loading up the game because of my sound!! All is well now, but the only game I can't seem to run on Vista is "Scarface" I relaly wish I could play it. I mean it installs and starts up and everything, but the graphics are all messed up. All you see are polygons and just graphical anomalies. Personally, Vista is great and I love it. The Media Center is so useful, and it looks cool too. I'm happy and so far no real complaints except for vista and lil things like disabling some stuff, but once you learn how to do things properly its the perfect OS. | I'm Diggin it! | I'm still dual booting between XP Pro and Vista. I really like Vista's GUI. The built in widget type apps are very cool and there's quite a few to choose from too. Gaming takes a frame rate hit, that's obvious. But with a newer video card, I now have an 8800GTS, the hit isn't too bad and certainly isn't enough to cause lag in anything I've played on Vista. The Flip3D thing, while pretty cool looking, serves no real purpose. Maybe if there was a way to keep the 3D perspective instead of having to click the task bar every time you want to use it, then it would be nice to actually use. I've had better luck with my games since doing some Vista updates yesterday. Eve Online now plays good. Quake 4 and BF2142 play fine as well. I haven't installed any other games though. I really want to like Vista. Maybe by the time a service pack comes out, it will be a good enough OS to run full time. But for now, I'll continue to dual boot. BTW, for folks using Vista, what anti-virus are you using? | I think I might go back to XP now, vista likes to crash... alot.... It just happened again and I don't think I'll take any more risks with it for the time being. http://forums.hardwarelogic.com/51434-post30.html Worst crash I've ever had. I thought for sure my hard disk had died. Vista works well with alot of my apps. But I just lost about 2 days of SMP folding.
