| well it may not be the best but i personally run "Ubuntu" (Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu)... i personally like it. Comes with all of the typing needs, firefox, messangers, and wireless capability necessary. One of the flaws with this linux is the wireless though.. the drivers are not the best yet for this. Updates are in progress. But with a network cord, it works great. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need help. |

| totally free... you download an ISO, they supply you even with burning software to burn the ISO to a disk and throw it in the disk drive and reboot your system, boot from cd and it's simple! You can even test it out before installing it. You go to Start and Install Ubuntu when the menu comes up. This will not install on your machine. It will install when you actually are in the OS and click "setup" or "install... i can't remember. But you can actually test out the whole OS before installing it. |

| HL's Technomancer | What problems do you have with Vista, or things your not satisfied with? I've been using Vista for a few months and am quite pleased with it, it runs much smoother on my system then XP and the new layout I find much easier to work with. Just curious because I have no problems with it, but a lot of people do and they never tend to elaborate. |

| doesnt work well with some of my older games that i play online with friends. has a tendancy just to lock up on me for no reason. it might be a alot better when sp1 comes out(i hope so). but ive some good things about ubuntu lately as it is starting to become more common in canada. so im looking at this as an alternative until vista becomes more stable at least |

| I think it is possible you may have an underlying hardware problem if vista is just locking up on you. I had mine running for weeks at a time with no problems at all. I find vista to be very stable If you are having trouble with some games, try right clicking on the games icon, hit properties, go to the compatibility tab, and set the compatibility mode for Windows XP or 98. If you go to linux for a bit, don't plan on playing a lot of games anytime soon.... | Also you need to make sure you install DX9 on your system for most older games. Vista is DX10 and without DX9 you get all sorts of errors. You can run DX9 and DX10 side by side without any problems. the next issue with networking is with Linksys routers. If you are having problems with online games and have a linksys router it might be related to this. Vista uses a newer version of TCP/IP stack and this causes some issues with the versions used on the majority of Linksys hardware. There aresome firmware updates for this but most of the time you just have to set a static IP, as DHCP from the Linksys will often drop the default gateway for no reason. | Colonel Calamity | I agree completely, Vista is total crap. I myself dual boot with XP and Fedora Core 8 but I have also had good luck with Ubuntu. For a Windows convert, your best bet is Fedora Core8 with KDE, or "Kubuntu". ![]() Thanks HL and Corsair! My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members. |
