Default Vista RTM Display Driver Problems

i have vista ultimate rtm installed on a system here with same specs as the one in my sig (friend's comp) and im having "display driver" problems. this is ONLY, however, when im playing games.

for Counter-Strike, it completely crashes the game and has to shutdown. but with Rainbow Six: Vegas it just freezes, but the game contniues playable afterwards.

the message i get is on the bottom-right corner of my screen, saying that the display driver stopped working but now is back to normal. it's probably one of the most annoying thing i've ever seen in windows, let alone vista.

i think it has something to do with the chipset drivers, but im not completely sure. also, when i download the newest version from Intel and attempt to install it, it claims the system doesn't meet the minimum syste, requirements (which it obviously does, as it states the minimum is 1GB ram, a DX9 vid card, and adequate space in my "Temp" folder and there is >20GB left on the C: Drive).

i'm really confused. this is getting so annoying, it happens every single time. i don't know what to dooo!

Wipe you video card drivers by uninstalling them and then using driver cleaner in safe mode (assuming driver cleaner works in vista)

drivercleaner.net

Then install the latest forceware drivers from nVidia and see if it helps. I doubt the chipset has anything to do with it, but if this doesn't work we'll take a deeper look into it.

Also, is this the 64-bit or 32-bit edition?

i've wiped the drivers clean, and i have 101.41 downloaded and installed (newer than the 100.65 verison on the nVidia website even).

with both versions (100.65 and 101.41) i have the same problem. i have no clue what's going on.

some people, such as folks from here

Tim Anderson’s ITWriting - Tech writing blog » Vista display driver takes a break

are having the same problem, and say that the new chipset driver install worked for them, but many people in turn aren't able to install the new chipset drive (such as myself).

hmm, that's odd IMO. ASUS P5B deluxe? Like this one:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

Try this:

If that doesn't help (doubt it) try these:

Download Software, Drivers and Utilities Filters

P965 (The P5B Deluxe Northbridge) Chipset Drivers.

im gonna try those now.

the reason why the one from intel's website wasnt working is because as it was written for the G965 chipset, apparently there is no such thing as a graphic accelerator upgrade for the P965 yet (according to intel's website).

P.S. the first link didnt work, and im trying to download that INF update in the second link.

Both links died. lol.

Intel® 965 Express Chipset Family - Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family Information and Downloads

Go to that page and download the P965 "Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility." (make sure its the P965, the second one listed) if the INF update didn't help.

So both the updated INF and P965 drivers didn't help... hmm, I'm running out of ideas. This may just be a vista bug that will be fixed in later releases. Tried beta drivers?

the 101.41 is a beta driver actually.

im back to 100.65, it seems people have better results. turns out i was on 100.5x before when i was having the issue, and ppl also had probs on that one, but many seem to see them solved with the 100.65 driver.

ill post results as they come.

thanks!
