Default Vista hardware dont's

My neighbors procrastinated big time on getting a new computer and ended up with a Dell with Vista Home Basic.

It's a Sempron 3400+ (I think anyway) with 512 meg of ram and an ATI 1300 (I think) video card. I made them get a real card instead of using on board.

It's slow as hell. They don't mind because it's still faster that their old Windows ME machine......

IMHO, I would definately not let ANYONE no matter how little thay use it get less than a gig of ram. I also would try and talk them into at least the next up processor. They system is constantly thrashing the HD because it doens't have enough system ram.

They also have dial up earthlink because it's free for 6 months :stupid: . Every time you start earthlink Vista asks for permission to run it .....

They really should have delayed Vista another 6 months for Vendors to catch up with it. I see a lot of innocent people getting pissed off and since they are non computer users they couldn't migrate to Linux or Mac.

I blame both Microsoft and dell, IBKM, Hp ect....for letting MS dictate to them what OS they HAD to pre-install. At least when XP was released you had a choice what to pick.

I agree that it is pretty harsh to force people to get a Vista computer like that, but it's not Microsoft's fault if you install it on a slow machine. Most people like you and I (and people who frequent computer websites) will know that a low end Sempron and 512MB of RAM isn't gonna produce very good Vista performance. But hey, I guess if they are happy with it, then it doesn't matter if they had 4GB of RAM and an FX-62!

as an ISP, we have a small number of customers that have upgraded and each one of them wishes they could have chosen XP if they would have known about all the problems Vista has

Thanks HL and Corsair!

I'm pretty sure that the requirements for running Vista in any flavor states on the box that the reccomended requirements is 1GB of RAM? Those people should know what what they got themselves into. I mean, there's a lot to blame Microsoft for, but let's be fair here.

Even though I keep paying Bill Gate's shoe shine boy, this new tiered pricing scheme is just plain silly. 4 different OS levels with a total of 12 different boxes is more confusing than anything.

Home Basic Retail - Home Basic OEM - Home Basic Student
Home Premium Retail - OEM - Student....

See where I'm going with this? Whoever came up with this pricing scheme should be friggin shot. Then hung. Then dragged behind a tank with another tank slowly driving up his legs. Or swap that around for best results, glue him back together and do it again in front of his mother.

Q6600@ 3.2GHz w/ CNPS9700 | EVGA 780i | 2Gb Corsair DDR2-800 | EVGA GTX 280 1Gb Video | 1x WD 640Gb HDD, 2x Seagate 400Gb HDD, 1x250Gb WD | 2x Samsung SH-203B Opticals | Antec 900 | ABS/Tagan BZ700 700W PSU

any of the people I talk to at work (customers) all buy it pre-installed on their dell or HP or whatever and it is still buggy.... all I can help with is getting their dialup or content filter setup and leave it at that...

too bad we couldn't start a pay per call tech support line

Wanna hear the worse? A client of us bought a HP laptop, worth around $1500.00 US. It comes with Vista pre-installed. She sees the sound doesn't work when she watches movies so she comes in our boutique to see what we can do about it. Everything seems fine, so we check HP website to see if there's any help there. On the product page they wrote that they know the sound does not work while viewing movies and they are working hard to find a fix to this situation. They should released updated software shortly.
I laughed my ass off, for a good 5 minutes at least.
