Default Ubuntu Help Needed.....

I installed using Wubi

As far as I can tell I'm running Ubuntu 64-bit

2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Aug 20 17:53:40 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and I have 4gb of memory but only 2.5gb are displayed. I knew that Windows 32-bit had this issue, but I thought going to 64-bit OS eliminated that problem.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+
MSI K9N SLI-F V.2
2 GB DDR2 G.SKILL
2 eVGA GeForce 7800 GT 256 MB
1 Western Digital 7200 500 GB
2 Seagate Barracuda 7200 (200GB each)
Thermaltake Tsunami
Windows XP SP3

Yes, *nix 64-bit can and will see and use more than 2.5 GB of RAM, but what about your motherboard? How much can it and its BIOS handle? It's gotta pass muster with the hardware before the software (OS) can get it.

I googled and found this to be quite informative.

Does 64bit Ubuntu Handle 4GB RAM? - Ubuntu Forums

specifically stuff about how server kernals and desktop kernals are different. Does your CPU have PAE (Physical Address Extension) support? The Wiki about it states:
Quote:
The Linux kernel includes full PAE support starting with version 2.6,[7] enabling access of up to 64 GB of memory on 32-bit machines. A PAE-enabled Linux-kernel requires that the CPU also support PAE.
However, that doesn't fix the problem, since AMD states that all Athlon 64 processors are PAE supported....

My suggestion would be to try and install the server edition and see if it sees the 4gb, and if so, then its got to have something to do with the kernal or something. If not, then see if its enabled in your BIOS maybe?
