Default Is There Really an Alternative to Photoshop? Got Gimp?

Quote:
Adobe Photoshop – need I say more? It is the ultimate image enhancement and editing tool. But it comes at a price and it has a competitor - called GIMP. Or does it?

Nice write-up. About the only thing I do with photo's is resize so both programs are overkill for me.

Very true. Although, if you are editing images for online use, both PS and GIMP have some very useful features to keep viewing quality up and image file size down (way down).

Awesome review, I have been wanting CS2...but I think I will try GIMP first.

I am currently running on a Dell lattitude Laptop with a pentium III 733MHz processor. This is Temporary as I save money to build a good computer.

Manta
Is there somewhere that shows how to keep the quality up and file size small?

That all depends on the format you save the image as. PNG is the best lossless format. JPGs are ok for photos, but they lose too much information for things like wallpapers and screenshots.

Manta: Very nice article (another thread? lol) Minor technical detail, the Gimp requires GTK+ on every platform. It's an event-driven app run by GTK+'s infinite loop.

I do have a question for you (if Paul didn't beat me to it). Do you know whether Gimp's a multi-threaded app? I had a hard time finding information about it. From what I read on some forums, it sounds like it can be compiled for multi-threading but it's not optimized for it. J/W if you know for sure since you've spent a lot of time with it for your article.
