Default Steam (CSS DL)

Ok. This is interesting. I have the Steam program open. I am downloading CSS because some online web guru has been hounding me to buy it (so I finally did). I have the main Steam window open with the tabs (store, my games, my media, tools) and I also have a secondary small window open that shows the DL with a progress bar. Anyway. This is the deal. When I minimize these 2 Steam windows my CPU usage goes up above 95% (most of the time, at or near 100%). But when I leave them open at normal size then my CPU usage drops to between 5% and 15%.

WEIRD HUH?? I wonder WTF is going on.

The DL speeds are fairly slow and don't seem to be changing much. But it is reading between 100 and 150 KB/s. I typically get at least 350KB/s but I don't think that has anything to do with it...

I have been keeping my Windows Task Manager open to monitor it.

Any Idea what the heck is going on?

ok. Even more weird. When I was getting the previous issue, I had a few other windows open (firefox, everest, Excel). I have since closed down all but firefox. I minimized everthing and now the cpu usage is staying between 1% and 10%. So anyway... something weird was going on but not anymore... I guess I just need a reboot soon or something...

When Half Life 2 came out, I was still using dial up internet access :bawling::stupid:
I preordered the game, and had my disk at home by 3pm that day. It took me 4 hours to install because the servers were so overloaded and slow, in conjuction with my slow access... and the updates were required to play in single player mode. It's all water under the bridge now, but for the longest time I thought Steam would be the end of the world.

steam downloads take forever. A typical update download usually runs at 250-300kbps on Steam whereas my normal downloads run 600-1000 kbps unless its a slow server...
the lats time I formatted and reinstalled windows, I just downloaded my HL2, CS:S, and HL2DM. Took literally 2 days worth of downloading to get the games plus all the patches... no games for 2 days with continuous downloading....
This is why I have moved to BF2 recently

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Steam pretty much simulates QoS, if your doing other net activities while downloading, it slows down (or sometimes stops all togehter) I've never had one take more than 30 minutes, except Red Orchestra one time (full download, not update :D ), which took about 45 minutes.
