| So, well, Vista is out now and getting promoted to death - I even saw some self promotion related to "coming soon" stuff in a movie theater last night - and I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I'm curious what everyone's opinion of it is, for those of you who have already got it, or anyone who is thinking of getting it. I have told people who were wondering about it to perhaps wait a year or two until Micro$oft gets all the bugs and issues worked out of it, since there will doubtless be some that will surface. I know they will issue updates and patches to fix certain things, but I always think back to Win98, and the reason they had to come back with Win98SE, which is what we started on in 1999 on our first Gateway machine. But despite what I myself have told others, I may be falling victim to advertising and all the glitz that comes with a Vista ad,:embarassed: and I'm thinking of going Vista - maybe. I have thought lately of reinstalling XP, but I have wondered if it would be a good idea at this point so early into Vista's release, if I should just jump the XP ship and go with the new OS. My hardware is probably right at the line where it is going to be compatible with it. I've heard about 16 months is the age limit for hardware, and I don't have anything that's much older than that. In fact, I bought my mobo and other stuff 16 months ago, and I updated the BIOS in Nov. 05. Windows Vista...Yay or Nay. Show of hands? If it's not fixed, then don't broke it! |

| Functional Alcoholic | Most of us here at HL agree that we should give Vista 6mo so M$ can work the bugs out, and give companies time to release reliable drivers. It took XP about a year before it was worth using, I expect it will take Vista 6mo to a year as well. At first Vista should be considered on a case by case basis. Not all computers will handle Vista. Hell there are computers out there that people use that still can not handle XP, and are still using Win2k or 98. Last edited by Hitman; February 19th, 2007 at 00:19. |

| i just got it the other day. it runs fine on my computer. i haven't run into any problems really.. i have dialup access at my house because broadband is not available in the boonies. so be sure to update things like your 56k modem driver. this is something i didnt do. and had to download it off another pc (actually it was a mac mini) in the house and burn it onto a cd. (biggest waste of a cd) one thing i don't like about it is how it always seems to be asking you to allow it to do this or do that. say for instance i try to open windows firewall. it pops up a messege says do you want to do this? umm. yeah.. or else i wouldnt have effin clicked it. sorry. lol. but yeah it's nice i do like it. comparing to osx i think it looks prettier.. but osx is a GREAT operating system. ie: when i first moved out here, i connected to my super fast dial-up connection on my mac mini, and within minutes i get this messege pop up that says i have an incoming call from yadda yadda. it's just little things like that, that make osx so great. unlike windows vista where you have to fork over the big bucks to get the ultimate edition that has it all. btw i got home premium.. and so far i havent run into any program compatability problems (if cs:s and msn messenger or live messenger or whatever you wanna call it works.. i'm good) fyi, my pc: P4 2.8 ghz 1gb ram geforce 6600gt and my "windows experience index" base score was a 4.0 with subscores being: processor (calculations per second): 4.0 memory (memory operations per second): 4.5 graphics (desktop performance for windows aero): 5.6 gaming graphics (3d business and gaming graphics performance): 4.1 primary hard disk (disk data transfer rate): 5.8 base score is the lowest subscore, not the average. not bad for a computer i built several years ago. |

| "I've heard about 16 months is the age limit for hardware, and I don't have anything that's much older than that." Ha, I just brought back a friend's old Compaq laptop that's still running Windows 95 and working like a charm. (That is if you consider the ability to do word processing and play solitaire a working computer!) Back on topic... I have a free Vista copy coming, or at least MS said so, but have no plans to install it for at least a year. The Vista Upgrade report has too many essential programs on it for me to even consider an installation for at least six months. Was playing with a couple Vista machines at Best Buy yesterday and all that struck me was that the graphics were really cool. Not sure that's any reason to do even a free upgrade. | I'm getting a copy through school for free, so I'm jumping on the Vista wagon as soon as the Professor receives the serials. I'm planning a dual-boot setup (XP/Vista) in case there are issues with Vista. I've seen Vista running and it's nice. I had someone showing it off for me and letting me see all the neat features, so I kinda have become very interested in getting a copy.
