Wondering if anyone is using Mcrosoft's Silverlight browser plug-in.

Is there any advantage to using it rather than Adobe Flash Player?

Yeah, just looks like a Microsoft version of Flash or QuickTime to me. :dontknow:
I'e never heard of it before and probably won't ever install it unless there is something that I absolutely have to view but cannot do so without Silverlight. I don't even like installing QuickTime or the Java platform unless I have to.

I got it on my XP before formatting through Windows Update. No clue what it does, lol.

The only reason I have quicktime on my computer is because its forced upon you with itunes. God I hate itunes.

I use Quicktime Alternative...
but as for the silverlight, it keeps bugging me about it and I just say no

Yup. Personally I used CCCP + QT Alternative Lite + Real Alternative + Core AVC Pro.
Plays pretty much anything you could encounter.

yes it is available in different places but it works fine for many uses... there may be a few places that may ask you to update your quicktime and I just deny it and it works fine as is. What I like is that it has all the spyware-like auto-install crap removed... and the annoying taskbar icons and advertising the normal quicktime places all over are gone as well.
There is also a windows media player alternative but if you have XP, you can just have everything WMP related play through mplayer2.exe in the "C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\" folder OR use the mplayerc.exe in the "C:\Program Files\QuickTime Alternative\Media Player Classic\" folder.

Exactly why I want to get rid of QuickTime!

You should really look into the combo I described above. CCCP comes with a buttload of directshow filters (and the ever classic FFDSHOW + matroska splitters) and Media Player Classic, a fast, old school WMP like convenient player. Then you put Quicktime Alternative to get rid of .mov files, and Real Alternative to take care of .rm files.
Core AVC is for hi-def movies (720p but mostly 1080p rips) to get the best quality deblocking. :)
