| What specifically do you want to know, and what do you already know? I know quite a bit about the subject, but I'm not sure where to start since you started by saying it was intriguing =P ![]() | ||||||||||||||

In this category fits several sub categories, virus, adware, spyware and more. A virus is a software created to harm your computer data and/or render impossible the use of your computer. A spyware is a software created to spy on your surfing habits, passwords or other personal informations. This category is quite broad because a virus or adware can technically be considered as a spyware depending on the actions it takes. An adware is a software created to normally generate revenue for a certain company/product. However, the methods used to implement their publicity in your everyday programs can and most normally impede your computer and computing experience. A trojan is a software created to open a breach in your system, either to infect you with a virus or another type of malware. They normally exploit a hole in a software you are regularly using (see Windows, Internet Explorer) to inject themselves. See the trojan as a "loader" program to load even more crap on your computer. A rootkit is a program that can be used in many different ways. The rootkit term is very wide but normally describes a program that hides itself from the normal ways for users to check their system for running processes (task manager & others). It can be used to run a task to computer data for a company without the user knowing, to send SPAM everywhere around the world or even to share several illegal files. It can also hide adware and spyware. Really, rootkit is too vague to be defined shortly. A rootkit is more of a "shell" for other type of programs/malware than anything else. Hacking programs per se are just practical bundles of holes and security breachs for certain applications. Most "computer hacking" programs (programs to harm another computer) as people see it (taking control of another computer and such) use a trojan as a base which makes those very easy to discern unless they are regularly updated. Hacking is also a broad term that cannot be defined shortly. You can technically "hack a database", gaining access to certain usernames and passwords as you can also technically "hack a CDROM drive" by making it do something that it wasn't programmed for in it's original state. It's important to note that not all "hacking" is illegal, though what people usually refer to (taking control of a computer without the user knowing) is not considered legal and therefore should not be talked about here. ![]() If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you? | |||||||||||||||
