Default Program won't run

My sister has been trying to install a photo editing program (Photo Impact 11)to her new system, and though the setup runs fine and the install seems to work, the program will not open. It just gives the "Program is having a problem and needs to close" message, or it just crashes to the desktop.

She has this same program installed on another computer in her house, and it works on that one, but not on hers. She has tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times, with no luck. I had her run Registry Mechanic and I suggested doing a defrag also. I was just on the phone with her and she reinstalled it again...same problem. I also suggested she try to install it on yet another computer to try to determine if the problem might be with her system or if the program disc is corrupted somehow.

Any ideas why this might happen?

Try running the registry cleaner in CCleaner. If that doesn't fix it... report back.

New system? New as in a Vista OS? I know that some PI revisions will not run well or at all on Vista. If the new system is Vista I would look to a few Vista compatability list for ULEAD Photo Impact.

I'll suggest the CCleaner idea to her.

As far as the OS, it's not Vista. It's good old XP Pro SP2. The other computer in her house (the one I built for my mother) has the same OS. I haven't talked to her today, so I don't know how things are with the issue. I'm at a loss as to why it would work on one system and not on the other when they both run the same OS. I thought also about having her run DiskCheck maybe just to try and eliminate the possibility of a HDD issue.

Something I just thought of...is it possible that the program will not run on a C2D platform running with DDR2?

It should run on C2D. Most refrences I have see with problems have been Vista related OSs. I would run the regestry cleaner in CCleaner and see if that helps.

Well, okay...she ran Registry Mechanic and the registry cleaner in CCleaner. The CC gave her a bunch of errors referring to unused file extensions and some other various stuff. I had her run the repair on these things, and I had her run the defragger too, but still no luck with her program.

The error that comes up when the program tries to open says something about "MFC42.dll". I'm gonna try googling that to see what I find. Even Nova Development's T.S. doesn't know what it means - they say it's a problem for level 2 T.S.

I suggested she restore her system to a point before the first attempt to install the thing, then run all the registry cleaners and a defrag, and then try to install it again. I guess I'll find out what happens this weekend.

This may be of some help:

MFC42.DLL

There is a possibility the program relies on this .DLL file and it is not seeing it where it wants to see it.

She could use the search function and see if there is more than one of the file. Also when I have issues like that I rename the one I find and replace it.

Her program is still giving her problems. She did a system restore to a point before she installed it the first time, did a defrag and ran both Registry Mechanic and CrapCleaner. She reinstalled the thing again, and still no luck. She did actually get it to open and run for about 5 minutes, but it crashed out on her.

The program is installed on my mom's computer and runs fine. She uninstalled it from that computer and then reinstalled it, and it still works fine. But it refuses to run on hers. When she installs it on her new system, it seems to have 1 or 2 fewer files than the version on the other computer. She is now thinking of buying another copy of the program to try. The only crucial differences between her new setup and my mom's setup are a different cpu and and different types of RAM. The OS is the same on both. I'm at a loss why the program won't run.

I hadn't given any thought to reinstalling Windows because the install went smoothly and there were no problems during or after, and all her other software runs as it should. My wife agrees with you, though, about doing a reinstall. Only problem is I have the OS disc, and I'd have to drive quite a way to help her with that.
