Default Problem with .AVI files

My wife got some video files off of VEOH that are in an .AVI format. I've borrowed some of her files because I wanted to use bits and pieces for a music vid, but I'm having this problem where all I get when I import the files into the video editing software is the audio portion - no video at all.

And until I downloaded an XVid Movie codec, the files wouldn't work in Windows Media Player either. But I got the codec, and they now work fine in Media Player.

Any suggestions as to how I can get the files to display the video in my editing software? This is not a problem on the wife's system for some reason, but it is on mine. And I just updated the video driver (169.21).

If it's not fixed, then don't broke it!

What is the editing software?

Something you can try as an experiment with a single file is change the file extension from .AVI to .MPG and see if that works.

I use DivX Video Codec, has every codec you need. Be careful when you install it though, if you don't pay attention it will install some bloatware. Just uncheck everything except for the codec.

it seems your editing software has not been set to use that codec yet, look through the software options and add-ons to see if there is any way to enable other codecs

We're using Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6. I'm pretty sure that by default, the software is only compatible with certain file types, because we've already tried some that didn't work with it (AVI wasn't one of them). I'll have to check the file options again, and see if they can be changed.

EDIT= My only options for codecs are these:
-Ignore third party DV codecs
-Use Microsoft DV codec
-Strictly conform to AVI2 specification
-Disable multiprocessor AVI rendering

Combined Community Codec Pack

Useful link removed from above post. I don't feel like rewriting all of the previous post because it got deleted due to one cuss word. To be short, just use it... no exceptions.
