| I am interested in getting into photoshopping. I go to the Adobe website and photoshop (CS3) is $650!!! WTF?!?!?!? In this day in age with free OS's (linux) I am NOT used to paying $600+ for software!!! Not saying that photoshop is bad, I just was surprised. | Photoshop is a very powerful program that is well deserving the cost. There are other alternatives for virtually every need. Why were you looking for for Photoshop in the first place? PSP (Paint Shop Pro) is cheaper and arguably just as useful as PS. An open source version that I here is good and is free would be gimpshop, but of course you can just google for PS alternitives. | I can't stand PSP omg. The interface is just too messy, and it isn't near as good as PS - Especially the two latest versions versus each other. Yea, $650 is a helluva price tag, but it definitely is worth it. You may be able to find it from people on various forums trying to sell a copy for cheap if they don't want it anymore, or you can work out a payment plan from a large retail store. That's what I did with BestBuy. |

I have CS3 extended - for me, I use it enough for it to be worth the price, but for most folks I doubt its worth it. Manta | |

| I definitely wouldn't have it if it weren't worth it for me. It's totally up to you. And yes, GIMP is the best solution for you to experiment since it's totally free. But I know you inquired about my PS tutorial, I'm pretty sure you won't be able to follow it very efficiently for GIMP. |

| I'm downloading the PS trial right now. I'll look at Gimp. Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 + Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme DFI Blood Iron P35-T2RL + Thermalright HR-05 IFX 2GB G.Skill 800MHz F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 320MB Silverstone Decathlon 650W Western Digital 250GB SATA II |

| You may want to take a look at the slightly older CS2, which is still very powerful. Opteron 64 165--1.5GB DDR--ECS KA1 MVP(thanks HL!)--x1800GTO 256MB--Seagate 320GB SATA--Antec 550 Watt--Antec P180 |

| GIMP does everything I want it to do, and sometimes more the PS in some categories. I have PS CS3 and it doesn't hold a candle to the GIMP. | I actually used GIMP today because I wasn't on my own computer with CS2. I'm clearly more used to CS2, but GIMP got what I need to do done (some website work, looks nice now IMO). :) - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - DFI Infinity 975X - 4GB Corsair XMS2 w/ DHX DDR2-800 - 250GB Seagate 7200.10RPM + 160GB Hitachi 5400.4RPM - ATi Radeon X1900XT 256MB - Cooler Master Centurion 5 + OCZ StealthXStream 600W - Acer 19" P191W Monitor - Logitech Z-5500 Digital + Logitech MX Revolution - Vista Ultimate x64 |
