Default OS won't install

Ok I have decided to reformat my desktop pc this evening. After backing up all the stuff and loading the Windows XP disc, and click on Install I get an error message saying that the Windows version on my pc is much newer than the one on the disc. I did a refomat like 18 months ago using the same Windows XP disc, dunno why I get that message. The only thing I can think of is that I use the Vista Transformation Pack and sh!t, but that shouldn't give that error message. What do you fellas think?? and yes I bought the Windows Disc at a legit pc outlet. :D

I am wondering if uninstalling the VTP and try reinstalling the OS will solve the problem. Well that will have to wait till weekend cause I don't have the time for such things during the week days.

drew, if you have the same problem and found a way to fix the problem, please let me know how to do it cause I really need to clean out my desktop like now. Hmmmmmmmmmm come to think of it, maybe if I get a new sata hdd I can bypass that problem.

Don't install it through the operating system. Put the CD in the drive, reboot, go into the BIOS, change the boot order so it boots from the CD first, then the HDD, then save changes and exit the BIOS, hit a key when it says "Hit any key to boot from CD", then it will take a few minutes to load windows. After that you can delete or create partitions and format your partition and then install windows on that partition, all right from there, don't bother with doing it in the OS...

Exactly, when you do it that way (which is how I've always done it), you SHOULD be able to format the drive regardless of the windows version, then when you sart from a blank drive, there's no way it can be affected by the previous version.

Just like they ^^^^^ said. When you installed service pack2 you made the windows on your computer newer than the install disc so you can't reinstall from windows, only from rebooting and having the cd-drive as the first boot device.

Ok, since I don't have the experience nor time to do all that work I am gonna drop off the rig to my techie that built it for me and let him do the work. Also gonna upgrade the storage capacity with a Maxtor Diamondback 200 GB sata hdd. Tell me something, should I put the OS and programs on the smaller 60 GB sata hdd, and use the new 200 GB for pics, music ect.?? That way I have stuff in a more organized system. Tell me what is the ideal setup for multi hdds.

That would be nice in terms of having a large backup drive, but if the 200GB is faster (like mine compared to my 80) I would use it as a boot drive.

Yeah, when using multiple drives like that, you'll want to put your OS and programs on the fastest drive and then put things like backups, and mass storage on the slower drive. My personal setup includes a 74GB 10,000rpm drive for my OS and programs, and a 250GB 7,200rpm drive for my music, pictures, movies, and backups. Works quite well.
