Smile Ohio LinuxFest 2006

My son and I attended the Ohio LinuxFest 2006 this morning, and we only managed to sit through one of the sessions. I guess I should have figured it out, but the sessions were really geared to the corporate user. Since I am happily no longer a corporate user, I was pretty eager to get out of there. They are also still very heavily populated by UNIX gurus. I was hoping to feel a little more at home than I did, but I can understand why I didn't.

Now if any of you are interested in integrating Linux into an existing Windows corporate environment, this would have been very useful. They were doing recordings of the sessions too and our speaker said it was for a podcast. So I imagine you'll be able to get access to them in a few weeks.

The exhibits were.........how should I say it.......an afterthought? Maybe that is too harsh but they didn't even have an exhibit hall, they just had the hall outside of the meeting rooms. What did I really expect from a bunch of hardcore UNIX geeks and besides registration was free. For the right person, this morning would have been very worthwhile. There was a lot of free stuff to be had so I still look at it as a worthwhile trip.

Inventory of our haul:

Suse Linux Enterprise 10 CD (desktop and server versions)
Fedora Core 5 CD
Freespire Linux CD
Ubuntu V6.06 LTS CD (can be run live or installed)
Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise 15 CD Evaluation Kit
Sybase Powerbuilder Enterprise 10.5 45 day eval CD
Open Solaris Starter Kit CDs
License Plate holder from Sybase.
Third Quarter Issue of ISUG Journal
Executive report from IBM August 2006 Issue
International Developer August 2006 Issue

I was actually planning on attending but I couldn't get the schedule worked out (I guess you didn't see the thread I posted lol). Sounds like I didn't miss much. It would have been a long drive since I now live in Indiana, so I'm glad I didn't go then. You made me feel better. Thank you lol :)

Sounds like most of the free stuff I could download anyway, so that makes me happy too :P lol

I'll have to check out the podcasts when they're available :)

Thank you so much for this post! :D

I think it was your original thread that let me know about this. I couldn't find the thread when I looked for it to post this though. I remember replying to the original thread that my son and I might attend. It way have been one of those lost posting events though. I had a few of those.

Anyway, thank you also.....for the original info about this. It was a good road trip (2 hour drive). And that used to be my stomping grounds during HS. So I never mind an excuse to go back.

Yeah... I used to live pretty close to it too (where do you live now?). And now that you mention it, I think I remember your reply now. For some reason I was thinking that noone replied to it.

oh... I guess I should have read your location before I asked lol. I used to live right by you. I've lived in Lancaster (Fairfield County) and Barberton (right next to Akron).

My Dad was born in Lancaster and my daughter has performed with the Magical Theater Company in Barberton. It is a small world sometimes.

Yes, it surely is! :)

"It's a small, small world after all..." lol

I just found out that one of the regulars from the MPC forums lives a couple miles away from me! I'd like to meet him sometime :)
