| Hey, I am lost with this error: ntoskrnl.exe is corrupted or missing, etc. Im using windows vista, and I updated my video drivers through windows own driver updater, and upon reboot I am left with this. I have no idea how to fix this on vista. I tried the disc repair thing off the cd, but it doesnt even say I have an OS installed. I tried the repair function without selecting an os, and it says it found a problem and tried to fix it, but nothing is different upon restart. I also tried to search for this file in the system32 folder, where it is supposed to be, but I am only allowed to search for system information files. I really dont want to reformat, as I just did it 6 days ago and was finally up and running fully again. Please for the love of god, help me fix this garbage. | Since there's no indication that you have a bad Windows Vista CD, you're going to have to reformat and reinstall Vista. Vista's driver updates for Nvidia based cards has really been sucking. When I let Vista auto update my video card driver, it killed my OS install. I ended up installing Vista over again without allowing it to search for drivers for the install. Then, once Vista was up and running again, I did manual updates through Microsoft's website, not picking any video drivers. Your error is a Boot.Ini issue. The Windows CD, be it XP or Vista, cannot always fix the boot sector. | Yeah, I've gotten that error before. As Quakindude mentioned, it has something to do with the boot files used by Windows to start up. Try just reinstalling Windows and be very deliberate about what you do, see if that clears up the problem. | ||||||||||||||

| This is worth a read: Windows Vista Startup Process - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There are some differences in the booting of Vista versus previous Microsoft operating systems. The BOOT.INI no longer exist and has been replaced by a BCD file. Here nor there really. Your system is getting to where Winload.exe is involked by the boot manager and is looking to load the kernel ntoskrnl.exe (New Technology Operating System Kernel) and there the problem lies. The file is either corrupt or missing. Missing meaning it could be there but the Winload is looking in the wrong place. At that point the error is thrown. You may have some look with a Google to Repair Vista BCD. Your best bet is likely a reinstall of Vista as was suggested. Not fun but unless you can turn a simple fix with the Google search, the likely solution. I am at work so I have to get outta here. Ron | ||||||||||||||

| Before rushing to reinstall I need you to check something. Do you have an external HD or a second HD hooked up to your system? I had this same error and discovered that for some reason my BIOS was looking at the wrong drive for the file. A simple BIO setting fixed it for me. Check this before doing a reinstall.
