Default Norton & Unzipping Folders

It took an entire hour to unzip PHPBB. When I started unzipping phpMyAdmin, I got tired of waiting and pushed Ctrl+Alt+Del to see what was going on.

The source of the problem? navw32.exe - Norton 2006. It was scanning every file as it unzipped. That's not a bad thing - at least, it wouldn't be if it didin't add an extra hour to unzipping a 1MB file.

And guess what! Disabling auto-protect doesn't stop it from slowing down my decompression!

Another reason to switch to Linux...

I personally don't understand why anyone uses Norton, its an ineffective, bloated, resource hog

QFT!

When I get my own PC built, I'm going to use Linux as default and keep a second partition for Windows.

Its not so much Windows....which isn't a bad OS....its programs like Norton that just completely take over and screw things up.
I've had serious problems with Norton and Panda, and trying to uninstall them led to complete formats and reinstalls of the OS....I'll never use anything but AVG again.
What are you setting PHPBB up on? I've become quite the phpbb expert, so if you need any help, please let me know.

I hate anti-virus with a passion  That's why I want to switch to linux.

Just on my local server so I can play around with it. I got a MySQL error after I setup the PHP admin, so I've got to fix that before I can go on with the PHPBB.

Yuri, what other antivirus programs have you tried besides Norton??
I really liked AntiVir, and it's free. I'm using AVG right now and it seems to be ok (also free). I've also used Trend Micro PC Cillin, but I didn't like that very much. There are lots of alternatives.

I've used AVG, but my parents keep dumping money into Norton, so we use it :(

And I could say it's also ineffective, a bloated program and a ressource hog.
What?! :P
No really, Norton was "acceptable" until 2003 (under Windows, under Mac it's still good). Since that time it began growing so fast it just became a fat slug. There's alot of unneeded eye candy, and processes for just about everything. The proxy application is a total nightmare sometimes to uninstall and you won't be able to access the internet everytime it crashes, that being normally after 15 minutes. Back when you reboot, you disable auto-protect and scan with AVG. 151 viruses found! How is that possible? It's so popular malware target it and disable it in no time...
Mc Afee is Norton #2 and Trend Micro PC cillin Norton #3. They're becoming as big as it everyday that passes. Try either Avast, AVG Free or Antivir, they're all very good.
I had Antivir first, but I didn't trust it very much, it seemed so "homebrew". It's still a very good antivirus however, judging from the virus'less machines I always displayed when I was using it. After that I found Avast!, but each time it found my old home made trojans a red alert started and the sound was terrible. Sometimes that happened when I was playing a game, too.
I'm currently using AVG Free edition and i'm highly satisfied. I install it on every client computer when I install Windows and I make people switch from more popular antivirus software to this one. Heck, everyone around me is using AVG Free. :D
Besides, safety first. Trash Internet Explorer and use an alternative such as Opera or Mozilla Firefox. While they do have their own weak points, they're lest known therefore you're likely not to get infected. It's almost a joke to make an activeX that will destroy your computer, sigh IE

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?

ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Josh why must our family invest in such horrible antivirus programs?!!! AVG is the absolute best because you can get it for free! ;-D I don't understand why someone would want to spend $50 or more on a antivirus program like Norton, Panda, or Bit Defender when they can get the best that there is for free! AVG!
