Default Need help setting up Ubuntu for internet

Ok, I recieved the cds from Screwball and installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (very nice looking OS btw). I have messed with this for 2 days and can't figure out how to get it to connect to the internet . I went into Administrator/networking properties and configured the modem and lan settings. But where is the connect button??? . I had to connect my serial modem to my main rig to get here to get help...lol

Also, on the local lan side of things, I can access my XP rig from Ubuntu but I can't access Ubuntu from main rig.

Wireless or ethernet? If its wireless install ndiswrapper and install NT drivers using it. If its LAN, look for linux drivers for you motherboard.

In order for your XP systems to 'see' and 'access' Ubuntu you'll need to install and configure Samba.

In a terminal (console) window type

Code:
sudo apt-get install samba
Then, go to System > Administration > Shared Folder from the desktop.
Select whichever folder or directories you would to like be seen, shared etc.
Give users whatever level of permissions you want them to have.
You may need to reboot the Windows systems before they'll see the newly shared directories (sometimes, not always).
Be aware that Ubuntu does NOT like sharing entire Home folders, or root.

I would recommend creating a special folder inside your home directory, and sharing it.

I'm with Panda on this one (Dread gave great advice, BTW). We need to know what type of device you're trying to connect with. If it's wireless, I recommend installing wireless-assistant.

Well first I tried to use the same one I used for windows which was a Lucent win modem PCI card for dial up. I was reading through alot of the help sections a saw where win modems were not supported in Linux so I hooked up my old Supra external serial modem. Ubuntu detected it and its port unlike the win modem. But I am trying to connect to net via dialup modem.

I will get the Samba app for the lan part of it, thanks.

And how do you get to the terminal console

Well, in that case, I can't help you. Sorry, bro. I've never used dial-up on Linux before (or any dial-up, for that matter, in quite a long time).

Applications > Accessories > Terminal if you're running GNOME. An alternative to this is to use a real terminal (a terminal in a window is technically referred to as a "terminal emulator") by pressing CTRL+Alt+F1. You can switch among 12 different terminals using the function keys along with Alt (CTRL+Alt if you're in the GUI), where Alt+F7 is your GUI terminal. The advantage of this is that since it's independent from Xorg, it won't affect what you're doing (such as compiling source code or downloading files) if X crashes or has to be restarted.

Oh, THAT terminal! I was trying to connect to the net useing the terminal. I started to think that was Linux's internet gateway .

No, no, no, no, no. The terminal is the text mode for Linux. It's sort of like DOS, only better, and with multi-tasking abilities. That's where all the heavy grunt-work goes on in Linux. (Sure, most of the things we tell people to do in terminal can be done graphically, but it's a whole lot easier to tell someone how to do something when we can tell them EXACTLY what to type, instead of "Click that button that looks like..".

A WinModem won't work under any OS except Windows.
You'll need to get an external modem, or an internal modem that is NOT a WinModem before it'll work.

WinModems (or ThinModems) are indeed difficult to use with Linux. They are designed specifically for Windows and do not use the same standard as a full modem does. Judging that you are using Ubuntu and likely just getting into Linux - or, you don't want any serious hassles - You have made the right choice to drop the WinModem

On the Supra, if you can see it, and Ubuntu knows its a Modem, you are 80% of the way there- - You may have to google around.

I gotta tell you though, I found getting a modem to work in modern Linux one of the toughest things with Linux. Good Luck.

Manta
