Default Microsoft clarifies Vista activation to bit-tech hacks

Default IMO

It is good news if you can believe it.

In the thread I started last week, I realize some people thought I was spewing forth speculation and vogue ideas, but if you actually read the link in my thread, it quoted the General Manager of the Windows Division at MS. I thought that was a pretty good source at the time.

No offense bro, but when I see the MS website EULA change, then I'll believe it.

Of course, it's only in MS's best interest to cater to the enthusiast community to some degree. I know MS hasn't made that loud popping sound one associates with pulling ones head out of their butt, however, maybe they've begun the attempt at last.

The way I really look at this whole Vista thing, is until the OS is completed and released, it is all up in the air as to what things like gaming, EULA, software support, etc... will even be like. We all, as enthusiast's can speculate all day and night what will happen, but until the final release its all just speculation.

Well, I'm with JPH.....its nice to see that at least Microsoft acknowledges the issue and will at least talk about it.
Lets wait to see what happens when the product hits the street before passing judgement. To be honest, Microsoft isn't alone in changes that will affect the enthusiast community, as there are rumblings that INTEL and AMD are both taking actions that could affect us all.......but again, until you have an actual product being distributed (retail, not ES or Beta), you can't say anything for sure

INTEL E8400 // Gigabyte EP45 Extreme // 4GB DDR3-1600 // Palit HD 4870 // Antec 1200 // Seagate 750GB HDD // Zalman CNPS9700 // BFG ES 800W PSU

I agree there. It's nice to know they aren't just ignoring the problems, whether they're real or not.

I can't wait to see their MP3 player. It looks mighty fine 8)

this is something that we will need to see in a legally binding text such as in the EULA before I truly believe it. Speculation and PR commenting does not mean that it is set in stone. For all we know, we could replace a video card, have to reactivate, then 2 weeks later replace it again due to failing gpu fan or hardware failure and be denied the reactivation and be forced to buy a new license (or press charges, or install Ubuntu Linux).

Thanks HL and Corsair!

My opinions are my own and not representative of this site or its members.

Kind of interesting that the hard drive looks to be the main catalyst, rather than the motherboard. If that's how it truly pans out, we'll have to start recommending the biggest, baddest HDD the budget allows. Although the 10+ reactivations in addition to the hard drive + 1 other component swap should ease a lot of concerns (again, if it pans out that way).

Just as with the pre-release hysteria, same concept applies to favorable news as well...as was brought up in previous Vista discussions and as Rich reiterated, we'll reserve final judgement until after seeing how it all shakes out.

I don't see what is wrong with Windows XP's activation requirements? Why can't they just do the same thing with Vista??
