Default Looking for pgrm to unlock USB drives

I'd like to know if there's a program that can unlock whatever it is that locks a USB drive? %95 of the time when I click on the little green icon at the right bottom of the screen to remove a drive I get that error "the device cannot be stopped right now..." this is very annoying and I know that the drive itself or any files on it is being used by any programs or the OS.

Thanks.

You might want to try to reformat it.

Has nothing to do with my problem at all!!!!

The drive is getting locked by something , most of the time by a program that uses the file on the removable drive.

But I get the same results when all programs are closed.

Similar to when you want to delete a file but it says access denied... most of the time it's locked by a program that's not even open.

I have a usb flash drive and a external drive that do this same thing! About the only way that I have been able to get it to say "safe to remove" is to run the shut down twice. Always seems to be ok the second time around, not sure why, but it always seems to work.

What do you mean by running the "shut down" twice?? you mean in the start menu??
I usually turn off my comp shut the usb drive off then restart

I burned a 250gb a few weeks ago by shutting it down without using the safe remove... so no more!!!!

Yeah exactly what I was thinking. Wait for the transfer to be done and just... unplug it.
Otherwise you might want to change the transfer and connection type of the drive.
Connect your drive, go to device manager (Control panel->System->Hardware tab->Device manager or Start->Run, type "devmgmt.msc") then find your drive in the list (Disk drive section->Name of the drive)
Right click it then Properties, Policies tab and then change the write caching and safe removal mode to Optimize for quick removal. :)
