Default Linux and You:Part 2-Using Linux

Aight, I figure i'd get to what I said I would do, and here it is. The using guide.

...But before I start, I need some idea on what to have the guide on

...So ask away!

First. Codec, I never needed to really install any codecs with Ubuntu or SuSE's media player, and I never really was arsed enough to..

Now, The fun part, installing applications.
Most commonly, You will have to install programs using the "Terminal". This is a Command Line app.
You put the location of the file in by typing it then hit enter to execute it. Remember Linux uses forward slashes not backslashes like windows. If you are installing an app with the terminal and it sayys you need "root" privelages, you will have to type "sudo" in from of the location of the file.
Ex, "sudo /home/username/mediaplayer.rpm", it will then ask for the root password wich you simply type in and hit enter.

I used SuSE as an example, However, I messed up my SuSE install, normally with SuSE you would be able to click on the file you want to install, A window would come up asking if your sure you wanted to install and you would click Install, this takes almost all of the command line usage out of Linux, Making it easier.

Alright. These were some questions that I had in particular during my adventures with Ubuntu...

1. How do I install the necessary codecs to watch movies and listen to music.
2. How do I install programs

I Like Watercooling. D-Tek Fuzion, MCP655, MCR220

Seriously, once I get a MEPIS guide going it will blow all the pre-consieved notions on how hard linux is to use with the command line. YOU DONT have you use the command line to install a .rpm package, you simply double click on it and the rpm installer will fire up. This is what happens to me with Mandriva.

Hi, Lead Head showed me the site, I thought it had lots of potential and so I joined.
I use an obscure but cool OS called BeOS, and I hate microsoft and IE.
System:
Motherboard AsRock K7S41GX
CPU AMD AHLDA 1Ghz TB 112Mhz FSB
3 HDDs, 1 60GB Fujitsu, 1 40GB seagate, 1 10GB samsung
RAM 512MB Corsair Value Select
OS: BeOS R5 + BONE installation.
GPU MX440 agp4x NV17 64MB ram.

Thats what happens with most distros, there is still alot of stuff that has to be done through the command line though

Well, I appreciate all your time and effort Lead Head....Maybe I'll have to add another partition to my drive and see what distro I like best.
What are your favorite Distros and why? whats a good one for beginners? Where is a good place to get support and drivers for distros?
