All smartass-ery aside, we're pleased to see Microsoft's attempt to more fully engage the development community as it marches towards a 2010 release of Windows 7. The 1,000-strong engineering team is comprised of 25 different feature teams each made up of about 40 persons on average. The whole dry but peculiarly intriguing setup is fully detailed on Microsoft's new E7, corporate transparency blog sitting just beyond the read link.

By the way, how many Apple employees does it take to change a lightbulb? 13, 1 to do the screwing and a dozen lawyer-types to prepare for the recall.
If it takes 1000 Microsoft engineers to code Windows 7, how many are required to change a lightbulb? - Engadget

i am excited for a new windows.. but it seems so quick. i really don't have too much to complain about with vista... i have used it since near the beginning and, granted, it was a little sketchy at first... it never really bugged me. and now that sp1 is out, it's lost a lot of the sketchiness.

but... OS X > Vista = XP > 2000 > 98SE > ME

I'm gonna be uninstalling my friend's Vista to install XP and Ubuntu today. lol :P

From my personal experience with Vista (FIXING it, not using it), I don't like it. But I honestly can't see what Microsoft is trying to do with 7. They've already done DX10....... lol.

(btw, in you're flow chart, I'd put XP > Vista) lol

I demand that anyone bought a boxed version of Vista (me!) get a FREE version of Windows 7! Yes!

Funny that this topic has come up... I recently read that Microsoft's legal department is three times bigger than the amount of Microsoft code engineers... apparently all 1,000 of them. ;)

You're thinking of Carlos Mencia.

But it makes sense. Once your software designers are done, they don't need them. Whereas people are always suing Microsoft.
