Default Good news to wikipedia haters

Quote:
In just six years, Wikipedia has mushroomed into one of the Web's most astonishing successes, with 1.7 million articles in English alone. The downside is that the free encyclopedia has its share of errors and juvenile vandalism, and sometimes the writing is incomprehensibly arcane.

To Wikipedia fans, these blemishes are an unavoidable - and relatively small - price to pay for the dazzling breadth spawned by its "anyone can edit" open design.

But Larry Sanger doesn't buy it. To Sanger - who was present at the creation of Wikipedia (in fact, call him a co-founder, although that, like many things within Wikipedia, is disputed) - its charms seem to outweigh its warts simply because it has no competition.

And that's precisely what Sanger hopes to change.

This week, Sanger takes the wraps off a Wikipedia alternative, Citizendium. His goal is to capture Wikipedia's bustle but this time, avoid the vandalism and inconsistency that are its pitfalls.

Like Wikipedia, Citizendium will be nonprofit, devoid of ads and free to read and edit. Unlike Wikipedia, Citizendium's volunteer contributors will be expected to provide their real names. Experts in given fields will be asked to check articles for accuracy.

I hate wikipedia. I tried twice to make a HardwareLogic entry into the site and each time it was summarily deleted within hours of posting it. No reason was given, and when I contacted the admin responsible for deletion of entries, the only answer I got back was silence.

Screw wiki. I wouldn't piss on that site if my life depended on it.

"Unlike Wikipedia, Citizendium's volunteer contributors will be expected to provide their real names."

My real name is Panda Man! Lol, do they really expect people to give their credentials? Its not very hard to fake them. Hell, I get mail all the time addressed to Panda Man.

You know, sometimes I think uncyclopedia is more accurate on some articles than wikipedia. It'll be nice to have competition to force wiki to do more about vandalism.

Now if something can be done about the OS market we'll all live in a happy world!

The name is too hard to say or spell (or even remember), I don't think it's gonna take off...

And they'd better not have one for Microsoft either

Too bad I don't give out my real name (except when I first installed Chatzilla and it entered my Windows account name...)

This will end up like Myspace in my opinion. Look at how horrendous that site is, constantly down, waaaaaaay too much spam and it's still the leader even though theres 5 or 6 more sites now just like it that run well. Unfortunately, everyone knows Myspace already and they just don't care to use anything else, regardless of how much more professional a resume looks on
MSN's social network. I'm afraid the same deal will happen with the new "wiki" project.
