1) download GParted and burn ISO to a CD
2) download favorite linux distro ISO and burn to CD/DVD
3) restart PC and boot with GParted disc
4) resize existing on existing HD or create new partition on unused HD to 10-15GB (or more depending on taste)
5) restart PC and boot with Linux disc
6) most start as a LiveCD, once at the LiveCD desktop, open the "install" file and when it comes time to choose where, choose the 10-15GB partition (may show as hdb or hdc).

Theres not really a whole lot to it nowadays, the linux community has made it much easier to install linux than it is to install Windows. With Ubuntu 8.04, if it sees a new device, it asks you if you want to load drivers for it. No need for all the extra run around and find compatible drivers of previous distros. If there is a program for windows, there is likely the same or similar program for Linux (with the exceptions of games). I am setting up Skype on my linux system here shortly.

Oh hell installing Ubuntu is nothing
And this little whatzit made it a ton easier, didn't even have to partition the drive

Auto installer to dual boot Vista/Linux...NICE!

Just doing things in Ubuntu are a little more difficult than Windows. I did however find a fairly good guide for people that don't know anything about Linux, and Ubuntu

Yeah, we had brought someone on staff to do Linux articles and contribute software articles in general, but it hasn't worked out....so we are currently looking for someone to step in as a software/OS contributor.

Just an Idea, and this could be a group effort, we could feature a distro every month. There are so many out there we would never run out. Just a basic article of what the distro comes with, how it rates to other common distros out there, ease of use things of that nature. You don't have to be a linux guru to do that.

I could possibly do something with Ubuntu 7.10. Been using it on my laptop since the year started and I've loved it. Especially with my Programming classes.... it's invaluable.
Don't need to log into the school's Sun systems, just use mine :D

I like this idea. But first, we need a dedicated Software Reviewer (we're hiring!). A good opening article would be a step-by-step Linux installation guide with pics (use a virtual machine for screen captures), and a good explanation of the partitioning process, file system, etc. As easy as Ubuntu is, there is still plenty of room for clarification. There are guides out there, but not at HardwareLogic.
