What color is the background?

If it's white, there's a menu option for "color to alpha". So you could do white to alpha. This might make other parts of the pic transparent :-/

I suggest cutting out the parts you want and "pasting them as new."

Also, afaik, jpegs dont support transparency. Save to png instead.

from what I understand jpgs can't handle the transparent backgrounds, best to use png for that

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Exactly, JPG cannot do transparency. PNG will do transparency with the best quality (although file size might be kinda large). If the file size of the PNG is too large and your image has relatively simple colors, then you could try a GIF.

As said, only PNG and GIF 89 support transparency. There are some other archaic ones that do, but I suspect GIMP doesn't have those formats.

The only small problem with PNG's is that Internet Explorer 6 doesn't support alpha blending so you don't see it right.
Since Internet Explorer 7 is being pushed on Windows XP users it's not so much of a problem anymore, but if you want the ultimate compatibility (WYSIWYG) no matter what browser someone is using, GIF is still the way to go.
Also PNG-8 is smaller in filesize than GIF Blake. You're probably thinking of PNG-24.

If there is a final hour, let's hope for a higher power. One by one, and two by two, I have ammo, what about you?
