Default DVD -> AVI software

I need some dvd to avi software.

Right now I'm using VLC but it is HUGE! I think its gonna wind up being 4gb big.

I can't use that big of a video. I need it <700mb.

Help!

Ty

[edit] It can be mpg or mpeg or whatever as well. Sorry to confuse that

I think Nero and DVD Shrink can do it

Thanks HL and Corsair!

Zambini, you don't have a DVD writer? Those things are very cheap now-a-days and would hold 4Gb. Barring that, DVD Shrink is my tool of choice, as mentioned by screwballl.

Edit: I should tell you, I've never tried to shrink a DVD down to 700Mb though.

I dont want to write them to a dvd, I want to add them to my collection of video files.

I'll give dvdshrink a try though. My friend can't stop raving about it.

Note: I tried using VLC, but I dont know WTF it did because I wound up with a 17gb file......

You probably didn't compress them. Change the format options. MP4 is good.

Use DivX to compress. I've seen 1.5 hour movies compressed on one 700MB cd, without any quality loss.

With VLC, just put the bit rate at 1024kb/s with the Audio at 196kb/s and set it to MPEG2, then from there convert that down to AVI

I dunno how, but I missed the convert to AVI part of his original post.

Today has been one of those days that's left me sitting here cross-eyed tonight.

There is no >AVI format.

And when I click mpeg1 or divx 3 or whatever it records seconds 1-38 about 1000 times over. That's how I wound up with a 17gb rip......
