Hi everyone, I just have a quick question about downloads. Since I've had so much success with my questions being answered on this site [thanks a bunch guys] I thougt I would pop up this question here also.

I've got my own personal website for author's and artists and I wanted to be able to let my members and viewers download certain things. Such as character profiles [word.doc] and other usefull things, but the thing is I don't know how to do this. I want them to be able to click a word or image and have a download file pop up so they can download. Now how would I do this?

I also have a font's page where I want to be able to let them download the font's that I use, again how would I get it like other font website's where once you've clicked the link it will have a download file pop up?

I think if you just make the hyperlink code url to the file's location and name on the server the browser will automatically ask the user to download the file since it cannot be displayed by the browser. Something like this...

<a href="http://server/file_location/file_name.doc">Hyperlink Text To Display</a>

Just copy and paste the html code of the website in a post with html tags around it all so it will post correctly as code. Just copy what I did earlier with the code I posted for you. You don't need every line of code for the entire website though, just an example portion you are working on.

As for your problem, do you know the location (URL) of the file(s) you want to link to? If so, just make a hyperlink like you would to a website, but put the URL for the file in there instead of a website URL and it should work.

Ok this is the part I"m working on right now. It's only part of a profle for a character in a book and I wanted to let the member's download the full profile if they wanted to.

her twin sisters
Blake and Ryan, a similar look to Selma Hayek.<br>
<u>Is she/he healthy:</u> Physically she is as healthy as
she can be, but
mentally the "doctors" have deemed her unstable.<br>
<u>If not, why?:</u> When she was six she was found at a
house fire that
killed her step father and step sister. Her mother as away visiting
relatives, but was thought to have been in the fire as well. Jordyn
ranted for three days straight about her twin sister's (thought to have
been made up) and how her stepsister and stepfather ganged up and
killed them both. It was found that Jordyn had stabbed her stepfather
before setting the fire herself. After this the social workers and
psychotriest believed Jordyn to have a split personality and chemical
imbalances. She was placed in the Virgin Bay Institute for Mental
Illness and has lived there her entire life. <br>

Almost...

The way you have it right now is only for the local directory on your computer, if you run the HTML file from your computer by clicking on it, it will work.
Once you upload to a website, it will not work.
If for example you have the HTML file in the main folder of the website.
And the download files are in a folder called downloads, then a link like

<a href="downloads/somedoc.doc">Click here</a> 

should work.

If the file is in the same directory as the HTML file then just

<a href="somedoc.doc">Link</a> 

will do.
