Default Direct X 10 and Windows Vista

Hi All,

I hope this is posted in the right area.

From what I've been reading it would appear that my current Hardware will not allow me to view the new Blu Ray format in High Definition. In addition, I'm going to need Windows Vista, a new graphics card at the very least if I'm going to be able to have the benefits of Direct X 10. Does anyone know if current hardware out now will support Vista, Direct X 10, & BluRay?

Current video cards will not support DirectX 10. Windows XP will also not support DirectX 10. It looks like DirectX 10 will only be available with Windows Vista and some next generation video card.

As far as HD-DVD and BluRay content goes, I think you should be able to view them using regular monitors and video cards. But I could be wrong, I'll wait for someone else to confirm that...

Correct, no current hardware is compatible with Vista, to view HD content on Vista, you will need a special moniter that descrambles the image

Hi All,

If this is true we're talking about a considrable amount of money to get the full benefits of Vista. I had only planned on upgrading to Dual core when AMD's new Processor became available. With the new platform prices on the current socket 939 would come down even more, at least that was my reasoning. There is no way I'll be able to spring for a new operating system, monitor & graphics card.

How about everyone else?

This is the same for me. I simply do not have the cash to drop for Vista and all its doodads. I won't be upgrading to Vista for atleast a year. Windows XP is perfectly fine isn't it?

I think there is a lot of misconceptions about Vista and its hardware requirements.
1. As to Blu-Ray technology, I think you'll need a compatible drive and media....much like trying to read a DVD in a CD player, it probably won't work.

2. Maximum PC writes up vista this month (they tested tested it on 15 different systems) and it worked fine on directX 9 based video cards, but not DirectX 8 based card From what I'm looking at with their testing, it all comes down to the CPU and Video card......and the cutoff seems to be somewhere around a 3500+-3700+ AMD CPU, 512MB of memory, and a 6800GT or X800 Video Card.
the OS is still Beta, and as such a lot can change..... and I'm sure you are going to hear lots of rumors, but keep an open mind until we get a lot closer to the actual release date.

Those requirements are going to keep alot of people away from Vista, including me. What the heck are they thinking? That we'll go for anything no matter the cost.

Hi All,

Capper you are right of course about keeping an open mind . It's just that when you read some of the info, it made me think that you're going to need a Super Computer to run Vista. Thanks for reining me in.

You won't need a super computer to run Vista. You will however need a decent computer of today's standards to run Vista with the extra features like AeroGlass. I don't think you'll quite need an X800 or 6800 class video card to run it, but more like X1300 or 7300 type video card.

And about the BluRay stuff... Yes, you'll obviously need a compatable reader to play/use the disks, but I think the readers should be compatable with Windows XP. Which also means you should be able to use any DirectX 9 video card.
